Sorry for disappointing you but your house is not biodegradable unless you live in a wooden house where everything is made of plant materials. But even they can be traced today (just one of many Iron age village).
Biodegradable gets a new meaning and is no longer related to fast composting only

Indirectly they do because as people move to larger properties, other smaller properties further down the property ladder become available.

 

In theory, but most are bought by those moving out of London around here, nobody local can afford them.
I cant imaging when they sell their 2 bed flat in London for half a million that some first time buyer comes along and buys it.

The government are using the problem of homeless ness as a reason to build millions of houses, when if the houses that get built are not suitable or affordable for those people the problem will go on.

The kind of people they are talking about are in tempory accomidation, those wont even be able to even think of buying anything anyway however small, they need to rent.

What we need is a wider spread of people owning properties. Too much of the housing stock is in the hands of a few, who make an absolute killing out of it. Unless you can get on the housing ladder, you struggle to accumulate assets, which means you have next to nothing to pass onto the next generation, which in turn means they can't get on the housing ladder, and so on. It perpetuates wealth inequality and bakes it into society.

 

Locally here builders promise, new roads, GP & Dentists surgeries, schools just to get planning applications through. They build the houses first and then say we don't have the money to build the 'Extras'

 

The crazy London prices aren't the issue in most of the rest of the country. Around here you can find 2 bed flats from about £150k and 2 bedroom houses from £250k. Still eye watering compared to what we paid for our largish 3 bed semi in 1988 - approximately £50k and now valued at about £350k.
House prices in the Home Counties have been out of reach for many for at least the past 4 decades and probably more. I was on a course in the very early 80s and one of the people on the course said they had no option but to stay living with their parents in Richmond. None of the property within commuting distance of his work were in his price range. If he moved far enough out to find affordable housing he couldn't afford the cost of the commute to work!

 

But we now have working from home which has caused a massive increase of people moving out of cities who have comparatively large wallets.
Some from London even appear to be moving down into the Southwest or your area.

I dont know about other places but I assume house prices are higher in all big cities in comparison to outside.
I get the impression Richmond is one of the most expensive areas to use as an example.

 

I have no idea about Richmond house prices. I used it as an example because of the conversation I had.

 

I dont either but I think its always been one of the affluent areas around there.
But its not places like that they are moving from in general.

 

I would think that people moving out of London/other cities to work mostly from home drives up property prices in nice rural/ village/ small town areas, at least the ones that have decent internet connectivity and have good enough road/rail connections for an occasional commute/office day.

 

@JennyJB The move out from cities will have some effect on prices but it will be minimal in most places. I also suspect that the allure of the countryside will soon fade for many townies when they discover the reality of living without 24 hour shopping on the doorstep.

 

Even more so for some who relocate to the coast. They view a house on a beautifully sunny day and move in with high expectations of how lovely it will be in the off-season, with walks along empty beaches, etc. During the first winter of howling gales and driving rain, they think “What the ?!?”. After the second winter, they put the house back on the market and move inland. Quite small towns on the coast tend to support a disproportionate number of estate agents. That’s why!
