It’s not a combi, @Jack McHammocklashing. It’s a conventional one. Or rather a malfunctioning conventional one.

I agree, @Michael Hewett! How BBC light entertainment progs qualify as newsworthy I find hard to fathom. Still, it does make a change from constant war scenes. The BBC loves a war!

@ViewAhead is your boiler a condensing one? Ours, which is 40+ years old, is traditional?

As for the waste pipes freezing up a neighbour of ours had theirs integrated into the sink waste pipework so that it never leaves the bulding as a separate pipe.

Our 42 year old boiler is very quiet. We love it. When we had a Cadent man visit he said we should hang onto it as modern boilers are rubbish compared.

Not sure re condensing, @cactus_girl. I just know it as a “conventional” boiler, with separate hot water tank.

I’m wondering how the warranty works. Can I get my regular engineer in or do I need the person who fitted it? Would it just be parts that were covered and not labour?

With my Worcester Bosch boiler, I've had the PRV replaced and the AAV replaced 4 times! The warranty covers it but you need a rough idea of the fault before reporting it to the warranty centre. They just sent their own engineer to do the swap.
It's always best to call them and run through it rather than use the website

It was the same with our new boiler. It was fitted by a plumber, went wrong and that was covered under warranty and fixed by their own plumber. I guess it depends on what has gone wrong but they were very quick to solve the problem, whereas we has to wait 3 weeks to actually have the boiler installed after the old one broke.

We have an old fuel boiler which looks like something out of the first Star Trek series. Soon after moving in we had solar panels and small heat exchangers fitted to provide most of our electricity and heat 2 new hot water tanks so the CH boiler just heats the radiators now. It's clock has died and will cost a fortune to replace so we turn it on and off manually but it is otherwise fine.

I can't see us being allowed a new fuel system if/when it dies but am not impressed with the price or other consequences of installing an eco heat exchange system for the house. We have big, old-fashioned cast iron radiators with thermostats which would probably have to be changed too. Government subsidies have allowed us to pay just 1€ to have the loft insulated but they don't come close to enticing a CH upgrade and came too late for the solar panels.

Yes, the wonders of a freezing condensate pipe. Ours froze in the first winter after it was installed. The condensated pipe had been run, by British Gas engineers, over the corrugated plastic roof of our car port on a North facing wall. The engineer to came to fix the boiler, we didn't know the problem was the condensate pipe, looked at where it was running and said he couldn't go out there due to 'Health & Safety' rules. When I said BG engineers had put it there he just shrugged and said he wouldn't go out. I ended up on the roof and he handed me out kettles of boiling water to defrost it! I then cut the pipe so the water just ran along the roof and into the gutter. We later got somebody to reroute inside and then through the wall to the external drain. There is still a section outside but I can get to it with a hairdryer if it freezes again. It hasn't frozen in several years.

Looks like no compensation for the WASPIs … as I suspected would be the case. Not a good use of tax-payer money, apparently.

Anyone else wondering what's going on with the upcoming sale of the Royal Mail ? Lots of pledges/promises but the buyer is a millionaire businessman so presumably there is/will be some hidden benefit in it for him. Another Robert Maxwell fiasco on the horizon ?

I have just fired off an angry, but polite, email to our Labour MP. IF she replies and if the "black hole" in the finances is mentioned again I won't be responsible for my actions ...
I reckon I lost out on at least £45000 due to the change.

Absolutely correct decision. The money needs to go the truly deserving like illegal immigrants being put up in hotels because they complained about the quality of their original accommodation.

They already know they don't have a snowball's chance in hell of being re-elected so they will do all in their power to destroy the country before the next election.
