Hedychium question

Hi all
I have several Hedychium planted out, and this year, my H. coronarium started to show buds, for the first time, but too late in the year to complete its cycle. Plenty of rain and very little sun.
If they don't get frosted (fingers crossed) over the winter, are they likely to open in the spring if I don't cut them back?

 

I would say unlikely.
I dont grow various Hedychium's because some flower too late even if they dont get frosted.

Even the ones in pots that I protect from frost get cut back during winter as I find the autumn produced shoots tend not to flower the following year.

That is what I suspected, but I am the eternal optimist.
The buds are still within the leaf sheaths, and I have spoken to them, very nicely, so I guess I will just to wait and see.

 

I'd wait and see if you think they will get through frost free, it just doesn't work for me.

 

Hi @Fof I would have said no chance, like @pete , because all mine have already gone mushy. But I visited a friend yesterday, and the ginger I had given her was looking healthy. Admittedly it was in a pot in a very protected position, in a walled garden. But if yours is still growing, it might just manage to flower.
Mine are all a triumph of hope over experience...

 

My H. flavum, which was wrongly identified as H. coronarium by the seller, was incredibly late in budding and flowering this year. It's still flowering now.
If your weather stays mild, the buds may open through the winter, but I think that's the best you can hope for. How about cutting them for the house? At least that way you'll get the benefit of the fragrance....

 

If they were fully developed, I would, but the buds are only just starting to peek out of the top, but still growning, very slowly.
After the recent gales, they are a little bit wind-blown.

 

I'd leave it and see what happens,
