I'm not particularly sentimental, preferring to laugh than cry, but that film has me in tears every time, especially the singing... It's the same with any church music and (to get back to C.....s), carols. A bizarre and lasting side-effect of attending my grandfather's funeral

I think this is the first time I've seen "Enjoyed" and "Recorder" in the same topic.

Try this, @KT53 .... The comments from people who learnt recorder playing at school are quite illuminating.

Spoiler alert: Not a Christmas song!

Remember my jar idea… well I should have trusted in my colleagues as they’ve been good as gold not going on about the ‘countdown’, probably because we are all in work for some or all of the week (hospital) so they are also feeling Grinchy. I should have changed the phrase to be “what days you working?” but as I am now satisfied that there are plenty of fellow Grinches in work, I’m happy.

                      Panto season.

Why is it in general funny when a (preferably fat) man plays a female role but one never sees (fat) women playing Dick Whittington or the likes?

It's not just pantos where I understand the gender swapping and an actor playing multiple roles is traditional, but everywhere. A man acting a girl part is apparently entertaining and funny by definition. Drag queens are an established art form but how many drag kings are there?

And why are crackers (the popping ones, not the ones for cheese) only sold as minimum 10- packs? We need two or maximum four for our foreign guests and the smallest pack I found is 10. (OK, thankfully this year most claim to be fully recyclable and plastic free, which is great).

I've just recently watched a live performance of a Christmas tune by a guitarist playing guitar and didgeridoo at the same time :rolleyespink:. He was an excellent guitarist and didgeridoo player - but a Christmas tune?

I think it's because women are considered "lesser" than men. It's the same reason people used to find blackface funny.

They don't even need to dress up. I went to see a play called "Stones in his Pockets" where two male actors played dozens of different roles, switching constantly between them without costume changes. It was only the voice and the context that told you they were now someone else.
When they switched to women characters the whole audience convulsed laughing. That's when I realised my brain worked differently. They were seeing men pretending to be women, I had accepted the women characters and just wanted to get on with the story.

What a coincidence...our local panto this year (yes, the joys of living in an ex-pat ghetto ) is Dick Whittington and the lead will be played by a chubby (I'm being kind here ) blonde luvvie Irishwoman :roflol:

Christmas crackers - we buy a box of 10 or 12 or whatever, use four or maybe five, and the rest of the box gets put away in the loft with the Christmas decorations for next year. Except when I forget that there are some up there and buy more
