Best supplier of compost 2024

Has anybody used Clover multipurpose? The Moorlands Gold organic I used this year was quite nice but expensive and had a fair amount of weed seed in it plus seedlings needed additional feeding if in trays for sometime before being potted on.
I and 2 friends ( one is a vegetarian and grows masses of veg and uses a lot of compost) are planning to buy a pallet load of compost but want to at least try and make sure we buy the right stuff. Somewhat annoyed as there are or should I say were good horticultural supplies called CTS who mainly supply the horticultural trade. I used them for years when living close to them and they were excellent. They sell Clover as well as their own brand of multipurpose both have a decent peat content…….I do plenty fir the environment without being holier than thou about using peat!
Spoke with them and getting a pallet delivered is not too dire delivery wise split 3 ways, however, post my phone call I have emailed them twice asking if there is anywhere close to me where I can sample the 2 composts, zero response!. I am not going to place an order for well over £500 and not have the faintest idea whether I and my friends are going to like it. I wouldn’t mind so much if they came back and said there is nowhere close but they have made no effort to respond. Not good business practice!

 

We bought some 60ltr Clover MultiPurpose Compost earlier this year and its as they say on the packet, 100% Irish Moss Peat and it feels and looks like exactly that.

We have used it without any problems, though mainly mixing it with some of the usual peat free rubbish.
Though have found Jacks Magic compost ok tis year, though they do seems to be changing its forumla quiet often.

If you want to try some Clover see if any of these places actualy have any in stock, though many retailers seem to be avoiding Peat based ones.

I use Clover, it was recommended by a friend. I buy it in Norfolk, a long way from you. Peter Beales Classic Roses sell it and so does the very good small, family owned, garden centre in our local town. I like it, better than the peat free that I tried.

The Irish compost manufacturers would of believed it would of been unlawful to sell compost containing peat from 2025 when the peat ban was supposed to come into force. Now they know they can carry on selling 100% peat based compost to the retail sector in England regardless of any impending ban, there is now no need to keep changing the formula.

Retailers that have gone totally peat free, might still think peat based compost is banned from January, or they have made an environmental decision, or, they are unaware that they can still stock and sell peat based compost as long as it not processed and bagged in England. Once they find out, or the sales of peat free compost drop off due to price, poor quality and results, then they might start restocking peat based again.

There is 3 outlets within a 15 miles radius from me where you can buy 80L bags of pure peat with no additives.

Some of the local show bench growers who have purchased my Leek & Onion, Potato and Carrot & Parsnip compost have been buying and stockpiling these bags of peat as they thought I would only be selling peat free from January. They are a bit gutted to find out they can still buy 100% peat based compost from me. They have been buying the Chempak potting fertiliser to make their own mixes, which now makes it considerably more expensive. They can buy an 80L peat based multipurpose compost for less from me than what they are paying for an 80L bag of peat.
