New cacti for my collection

I recently saw some cacti in a local garden centre, and they were labelled, which is often not the case, and I saw some I haven’t got so I bought a few …



One of my new cacti is called Lophophora williamsii and it can be used as a drug. Apparently it is illegal to possess it in the USA (except for the Native American Church in their rituals)



I won’t be using it as a drug – I want it in my collection

 

They are a nice size and look really healthy.
Someone spent some time labelling then properly as well.

I've had Lophophora williamsii for a few years now, it's common name is peyote. You let it get to a good size then harvest it by cutting the top off just above ground level, then with a little luck it'll resprout. The harvested top is sliced up and then dried and used in ceremonies.
More seriously I learnt last year that it has a deep tap root and likes a deep pot, mine is now in a deeper pot.
In the Southern States of the USA it is often tucked away under a bush that provides a bit of shade.
The labels look very similar to those on cacti I recently bought from Hill House Nursery, I believe the original source was Pugh's Cacti. They certainly seem to produce a good variety of cacti and succulents and the prices aren't ridiculous either.

 

I like the little one at the front on the right (as you look at the screen). Never grown them myself, but I can see the appeal, and it's always pleasing to add something you have not got to your collection.

 

I tend not to buy cactus unless they're labelled. Nice to have them labelled properly.

 

Excellent haul, @Michael Hewett ! Can I ask, how much did they cost?

@kindredspirit , really, you can walk past Poundland shelf of "cute cacti in cute plastic pots with wiggly eyes", noticing something interesting and not buying it!? I succumb to anything interesting and take the aftermath of trying to identify it as a bonus fun.

 

Quite easily, no name no sale. I can also easily walk past any cactus with stuck on flowers or those coloured abominations grafted onto a green stock; you can't manage on your own roots then you're no use.

 

I don't buy the coloured grafted ones, I don't like them, but if I see a cactus or succulent I haven't got I will buy it even without a name. I can look it up, and if I don't find its species name I can usually work out the Genus.
If it has those dreadful paper flowers I just take them off (Sometimes I even take them off the ones I don't buy )

They were about £5 each and the Lophophora was £20 but I HAD to have it !

I accelerate my pace when I see 'wiggly eyes' etc. Only once have I bought a cactus not named. I have 'The Encyclopedia of Cacti' Cullman, Grotz & Groner and I'm yet to positively identify it, although I know it's a Mammillaria. I'd say Mammillaria will have to do. The problems one has with OCD!

 

I'd love to have one of those @shiney, sad that they are endangered in the wild now.
Some of my big old cacti have died off in the last few years.

On another forum I belong to there's a lady from Queensland and she said the same, the only gardening she does is early morning.

I had an omlet with side salad ... can't be doing with cooking since being on my own.
