Who were they named after?

This thread has got me Googling to see whether any contemporary plantspeople have a genus named after them. No luck so far, although I'd be surprised if Roy Lancaster doesn't

 

The Zinnia flower was named after Johann Gottfried Zinn, an 18th century botanist and doctor.

It is fascinating to know how plants got their names. You just get used to them and then they change them because they have found the DNA actually doesn't match up to what it was originally named. But naming after people is always interesting.

Lewis' Blue Flax was named after Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

 

With some of the plant collectors you could probably have a garden filled with one collectors plants.
Paphiopedilum rothschildianum, Rothschild's Orchid.
There are a lot of plants named after Veitch. This was because as well as some of the family being plant collectors, they employed 20+ plant collectors to scour the world for new plants and some were only identified back at the nursery.
At one time the nurseries were amongst the largest in Europe, these days Veitch nurseries are part of St Brigid Nurseries who have a site near Exeter.

Araucaria Bidwillii - Bidwill, Botanist.

 

I've found there's a plant called Sedum 'Roy Lancaster', you can get the seeds on Amazon but it is 'currently unavailable'.
