I’d be tempted to say “No, I’m sorry you cannot, but what you can get is a knowledge of some good manners including the use of the words may, please and thank you.” I’d probably be dismissed and injured at the same time .

So, it makes it to a perfect A level exam text for the subject English grammar.

You "bringed" the very words out of my mouth @KT53  Whilst I haven't frequented cafes/takeaways for years, I have heard heard many people complaining about ordering something and always being asked "Do you want fries with that ? ". Nothing to say exactly what the "fries" are tho ..........the Chef's fingers perhaps ?

I’m irritated by so many ancient GC threads being resurrected with links to other sites. Yes, I know I don’t need to look at them...

It's not all that easy to do when you can read and write! Many years ago I was asked if I would like to do some proof reading and gave me a short manuscript to proof. It was hard work and the pay was rubbish!

@pete the only thing I would describe as 'cool' is either beer or wine fresh out of the fridge.

Hey! The only reason I'm on the admin team is to get that book written! I just can't decide on the title - GC, The Amalgamated Posts, or GC, The Amalgamated Posts', or GC, The Amalgamated Post's

Anyone else irritated by sentences that start with "So"?

As a self taught keyboard operator using an aging keyboard with its own quirks I make plenty of typos so I'm not going to expect proof reading on here but I do expect it in books, magazines, newspapers where, I assume (not presume!) that, as well as having educated editors, they now use software with built in spellcheckers to set the type.

Looking at previous comments here, spellcheckers are extremely random and often require further checks to avoid errors.
Some books I have bought for my Kindle are excellent examples of a lack of any sort of proof reading whatsoever prior to publication.
I wouldn't expect perfect language on a forum - if the meaning is clear, that is good enough for me but if I am purchasing books, magazines or newspapers I expect the content to be intelligible at first glance.

The "So" thing was a bugbear of mine for a long time, I used to really notice it when anyone was interviewed on "Today" on Radio 4. It wound me up so much I would shout back at the radio "NOT so! NOT so!". It's no longer an issue since I stopped listening to "Today" when Russia invaded Ukraine.

"A phenomena" is still driving me mad though. And "hone in".
