      Early, Second Early or Maincrop?

I've been growing Winston earlies the last few years but seed is getting more difficult to find. I'm going for Francis instead.

For maincrop I'm trying blight resistant Java for the first time, an improvement on Sarpo mira which I've had excellent results from, apart from they break up when boiled.

If I only grew one type of potato it would be earlies. Home grown earlies knock the socks off anything you can find in the shops.

If I could only grow 1 variety it would be Anya, it’s a waxy 2nd early related to Pink Fir but much less susceptible to blight. Stores well but not really for roast or chips. Have a look at Sagitta @Spruce, a friend who is a retired potato merchant tells me they are the best tatty for making chips and a good roaster too.

I wonder do the garden centre have any stock yet, or is it too early?

Lots in the one I went to today.

I buy them from a shop in Tenterden, bit of a drive but worth it, they are best just scrubbed before boiling.
I've also been buying Kerr's pink for roasting or chips, its a good one.

For first early I still like Foremost, they were a new introduction in 1963 but have become an established favourite with Amateur growers.
If you like Pink fir, but don't like the knobbly shape try Anya. Charlotte are one of the most reliable second early, even though you can get them in the shop as already said the flavour of home grown is vastly superior.

                      Sarpo Mira is great !!
Heavy cropper and no potato blight.

Just don't overcook them -- they seem to require less time.
Slightly pink skin, but white flesh.

Plant them on, and cover them with, chopped leaf debris/mould. Then cover as normal. They will be clean and polished when harvested.

These are the ones I buy, admittedly when I grow them I usually end up with lots of small ones and often multiple tubers stuck together, I shall have to ask the secret when I go next, they are expensive.

I meant to say, I get mine from a GC near St Albans, they sell them loose and do two sizes of "fill a bag" this let's you try several different ones as you can select different amounts as suits you.
Look out for Potato days in your area, like Apple days these events have several suppliers offering many different cultivars, again you can often buy small or large amounts as suits you.
