So the Channel Islands aren’t in the British Isles? Lordy lordy, I’ve lived here all my life and I still don’t understand this place. :rolleyespink:

I am personally very England-centric. I consider myself English, although one great grandpa was Welsh and one grandma was French, and when one of my sisters did one of those DNA ancestor things, there was also a fair bit of Viking in the mix.

I see that President Turnip has plans to get millions of new baseball caps printed, not MAGA but GAZA. And he has drawings already on his desk for a brand new Turnip Tower there.

That sort of nonsense is happening all over in fairness - you really think all the billions going to Ukraine are going on weapons etc? There is a hell of a lot going on behind the scenes that we are not aware of (except the half-information that gets trotted out by the likes of the BBC when they want to) and it seems to me that one hell of a lot of it is little more than a huge money laundering operation.

Standards seem to have hit the floor all round.

We've been doing a bit of travelling for various appointments and the one big takeaway that I've got from it is that this country looks as though it needs a damn good wash.

I get it is January/February, so things generally look grotty anyway, but the amount of litter, graffiti and general lack of care/maintenance stood out a mile. It is like we've given up.

I've given up and i keep myself to my myself, i'm a hermit and getting worse
I've even taken to reporting things to the council just for the hell of it ie litter, potholes, mud etc etc as i'm a tax payer i to can be a pain in the back side, if we have to pay more for things i'm now going to get my moneys worth by reporting things may be we all should do the same for a month

I was in Ramsgate on Monday to see the dentist, and nearby were two elderly people, out clearing litter. Apparently there is a large team of them in the town, who spend all year clearing litter - basically doing a job that the local council refuses to do, and one that shouldn't be required, if people were more considerate.

                      Just reading something regarding ISAs.
Apparently the City has suggested to Rachel Thieves that she should scrap cash ISAs, and it seems she has not rebuffed the idea.
I'm surprised it's taken this long.

Apparently all that money laying around is doing nothing for the government.

The City wants her to encourage stocks and shares ISAs. This is out of the Gordon Brown playbook. He wanted to get money into the stock market so he gave them taxpayer money by creating child trust funds and encouraging parents to top up regularly. Who gained? The stock market brokers and fund managers. Who lost? Taxpayers … and any parents sucked in will likely have got a pretty raw deal too.

Same old, same old. Boosting the wealth of the wealthiest by any means possible. Growth that isn’t really growth, but redistribution from the middle class upwards.

Real growth would come by rebalancing the gap between wealthiest and poorest. Impoverishing those in the middle massages the figures temporarily, but exacerbates the core problem.

I used to love this when I was working and orders came from high up about cutting budgets by say 20%. The stock answer was "which 20% of customers shall I stop supporting?" They never had an answer.

I have a stocks and shares ISA and see it as my pension. I am not wealthy at all. It is much easier for the man on the street to invest in shares now that they have execution only services. My hubby was involved in setting the first one up many years ago. It only costs £6 to buy some shares so the service providers are not making a lot of money on that.
Getting people to save is good idea.

In fairness, we did a CTF for our daughter, only putting away a very small amount each month - but, that allowed us to ensure that she got a good few grand when she turned 18; up to her what she did with it of course, as it was then her money.. and she sat on it a while, doing now't. Since she started working (she works part time as she is studying) she put it into a savings account and added to it herself - now, she has tripled the amount that we gave her and if she was able to move out of this God-forsaken s**thole that is the South East, would almost have a sufficient deposit to buy a house/flat. Bluntly, that is an opportunity I never had and never will have, so in that regard it hasn't been a bad thing.

Saving is a good thing, no question. But for most small savers, stocks and shares are less likely to bring a steady, reliable return.

My mother was persuaded by a high street bank to invest in stocks and shares. They organised it and took a commission. In no yr did the investments yield a profit, and commission meant it was actually a loss. A cash ISA or fixed rate bond would have been a much better bet for her. The stocks were a much better option for the bank.
