Alright: throw the worm into a bowl of cornflour and wait until it farts then cut it.

Well I was sort of being serious:) as the Robin looked like it was struggling to get lift off after yet another helping and 1 of it’s feathers fell out. Maybe under the strain of it’s tummy reaching gargantuan proportions.

Good to know we're talking about the possibility of a Robin over eating rather than one of those Blow up Jobs ( Santas mainly) that some people put in their gardens to annoy the rest of us
I doubt whether wild birds suffer from obesity issues - humans could learn a lot from them if they so chose.

I sort of skim read your post @Philippa and almost had heart-failure - whilst I accept I have a one track mind and it is a dirt-track, in my defence the text wrapping did not help... ;)

Sorry @Fat Controller - I should have said Inflatable Jobs - hope your heart has calmed down now :biggrin:
PS I don't really think Robins are into that but can't vouch for Santa's habits

An obese bird wouldn't survive natural selection, the same would go for obese humans if you went back in time. Perhaps reintroducing predators would help the NHS.

To be fair, if we allowed a bit of natural selection all over, we'd soon get the housing crisis under control - between folks running riot with weapons, cyclists doing what they like and folks doing stupid stuff like diving off cliff faces etc...

The ones running about here with machetes and kitchen knifes must be pretty wild

Hey, if we can get away with blowing up harmless robins.... ;)

Yeah, it annoys me when people go on about fat/greedy pigeons. They are big birds, they are eating what they need. People often post photos on social media of birds saying "look at this UNIT" when the bird is actually just fluffed up against the cold.

Certainly feral(ish) if not actually classed as wildlife.

I just thought I would put up proof that I have not blown up “ my” Robin! He must be the best fed Robin in Scotland and is now singing his heart out as miraculously the sun has been shining. He, no doubt is in prime condition for the breeding season having been fed vast amounts by me.He spends lots of time watching what I am up to from the top of the hedge and swoops down to the path when the next dollop of worms are on offer.

I recently read another good point about birds in winter - they can only feed in daylight, so they have to get through a really long fasting period in the cold after the sun goes down. No wonder they cram so much in!
