Fair warning, there is the odd one he does (especially so with Jim) that you might need a box of tissues on hand. Such a lovely family though and better than TV in my opinion.

 

The volcano on Hawai'i has been erupting again, since December. Seeing the eruption in person is fascinating and it happens fairly regularly over the years.

One of the interesting things is what they call 'Pele's Hair' but it is quite dangerous. It is strands of volcanic glass that is high in sulphur dioxide and can stick in the skin and just breaks apart if you try to remove it, leaving it embedded. So people are warned not to be downwind of it.

It is nothing to do with the footballer of the same name but the goddess of volcanoes and fire. Pelehonuamea, “She who shapes the sacred land”, who is believed to reside beneath the summit of the volcano Kīlauea on the Big Island

That's peculiar as I just tried the link and it popped on to the screen for a second or two and then disappeared. It wasn't particularly important but just showing the volcano spewing lava. It's a fairly regular occurrence and can carry on for days and sometimes months. I have been there and seen it and it sometimes overwhelms a village or two. It gives a warning and people have plenty of time to leave as the lava flows fairly slowly.

@Sheal I know you have seen the thread I put on here about ten years ago as you had commented on it.

Many years ago I wrote a guide book to Hawai'i (out of print now) and did a shortish thread about it when I was doing travel threads on here. Sadly some of my threads got messed up by Photobucket when they went back on their promise to never charge me for using their site for posting pictures. They then asked for money and when I didn't pay they overwrote the pictures or deleted them. I started replacing them but, like a lot of things I say I'm going to do, I didn't finish. The Hawai'ian thread is one that I did sort out.
