I've seen videos of that kind of snow clearing in Canada on FB @CanadianLori. Interesting technique.

In France and Belgium home owners and occupiers are required to keep the pblic paths in front of them clear so any grass cut, weeds cleared, hedges trimmed so as not to impinge on the pathway and snow cleared. Rubbish bins have to be put out and brought back in within a time frame of the collections and "objets encombrants"/big stuff only put out by pre-arrangement when such collections are announced.

It's all part of social and community responsibility but it clearly doesn't work in som places - Paris centre streets were a terrible mess last time I was there, tho not the main touristy boulevards.

Oh yes, @Obelix-Vendée , those are the same rules here however people for the most part, do obey. We have large item pick biweekly. You are allowed three items each time - a couch and two chairs, etc. We used to have one "big garbage day" each spring where people piled up loads of items all at once and the scavengers acted like it was Christmas. We cannot put metal items out though. Yes, soda cans, food tins in the recycle bins, but not auto parts or metal shelving or washers or things. Appliances are picked up as asked but most don't bother. If you put an old fridge at the end of your drive, usually within an hour, a scavenger has scooped it. And yes, bins out no earlier than the night before and empties back in same day after pick up.

I just get angry when they download the work of clearing their property and then to add insult, do a really lousy job of plowing to make the job even more difficult.

@CanadianLori yes the verge is a little area of grass on the side of the road and in this context between the path and road in front of a house. We don't have them outside our home but lots of the neighbouring streets do.

It's funny because most believe the law here, even though it's not the law, is that if you touch the area you are more likely to get sued. With snow I think you only get in trouble if you have tried to clear it and made it more dangerous but still people won't clear it.

As for the local parks team, they are busy hacking most of the growth from all the trees on the local pitch and putt and dragging off the pieces to be dumped just inside the woods. Given that we have had very dry summers and lots of fires I can only conclude they don't know the word kindling.

We are supposed to be able to see seven planets lined up in the sky tonight, in a few minutes from now for best, but nowhere do the news people tell us to look north, south, east or west. And it’s getting cloudy.

I have just ventured down the back garden, where it is quite dark. It is clear and chilly. To the west is Venus - very bright. There is also something almost directly above and the another further to the south east. They are bright and not normally seen. So I think I can see 3 of them. But I cannot see any lower on the horizon from the back garden and if I look out the front from upstairs my neighbours are sat on the sofa watching TV.

Just heard on the TV that you will need a telescope to see at least two of them.
These things are never what they are made out to be, how many comets have there been over the years just not been visible to the ordinary person.

Sky is clear here and stars amazingly bright considering I live in a big town. I could see Venus and Jupiter, both very bright - Venus almost like a street light! And Mars was visible too, much less bright but noticeably red.

Best comet I ever saw was Hale-Bopp. It was up there for some time.

                        Local news tonight.
regarding horses on roads and traffic.
I hate to see horses on roads, they dont belong there especially these days.
Its about time farmers were made to give them routes around fields so they dont have to use roads where ever possible.

In the report it was mostly about an 8 year old who was injured when her horse was frightened by traffic.
Really, what is an 8 yr old doing in charge of a fairly powerful unpredictable animal on a road with traffic, you wouldn't even put them in charge of a dog on a lead in such circumstances let alone riding a horse.

I saw Venus … but none of the others. :dunno: Apparently, if you don’t have a telescope, there are apps you can download and you point these at the sky and they tell you where the planets are.
