Ours are house cats too. It was one of the conditions from the rescue place that we adopted them from, and with all the busy roads it's not really safe for them outside (our garden is such that it can't be cat-proofed).

Thank you @Victoria. Here are Bella's steps ...

          Steps.JPG

She was a house cat for the two years of her life before coming here, but the road out the front is a quiet cul-de-sac so she goes out.
At the bottom of the back garden there's a narrow single track road with hedgerow and fields the other side of it. Bella used to hunt for mice and shrews there but doesn't do it any more - old age I think.

Local people using the little back road, and also some delivery vans, have come to know Bella, and I've seen them slowing right down to smile at her as they pass by. They often stop for a chat with me too

Although I can understand why it's better to have a house cat in some places, I wouldn't have a house cat because I like to open the doors and windows, I have them open even in the winter sometimes, so this isn't a suitable house for keeping a cat indoors ...
Bella decides herself to become a semi-housecat in the winter anyway, and hardly ever goes out even when I've got the French doors open

That is Cal and Candy. We found them just after they were born in a plastic carrier bag by the rubbish bin still with umbilical chords! I cried, picked them up and brought them home and cooled them with milk as it was 34c at the time. No rescues would take them but a French girl who worked at one said she would help and looked after them for five weeks along with a puppy she took home. we then took them back. We found them up the road in Calvos in front of the Candido bar., hence their names. She was a tart and constantly ran away across the main road and died aged 11 months (we found her on the side of the road). He had brain damage from being stuck in the carrier bag and disappeared aged seven. He was so funny and cute and lovable. It is Cal on the cupboard and shade sail and Candy on the railing.

Here they are at a couple of weeks with Valerie took and with the Puppy ...

My cats are house cats because of the breed they are - Selkirk Rex. They are very laid back compared to other cats and breeders will not sell them to you unless they are to be house cats. They do get a run round the garden when I am out there to supervise, but it's more of a stroll really, and Truffles often doesn't bother coming out. Midnight loves being out and makes a break for it over the fence occasionally, but when I go after him he's usually walking along the path towards the gate.

We have the benefit here Michael of screens on windows so we have the windows open most seasons (not when it is TOO hot though! They have the cat flap in the kitchen screen dor which is kept unlocked between 8am and 6-8pmish.

Why do you keep your cats indoors? Seems a bit cruel to me having owned several cats in the past who all loved playing outside. It should be up to the cat not the owner to decide if it is an indoor or an outdoor cat.

@Victoria, they are long and curly. I will try to post pictures soon.

We are able to open the windows a bit, because when we had new windows fitted a couple of years ago we had child locks fitted. These allow the window to open a couple of inches and then stop. I open upstairs windows fully but they have never jumped!
