Depending on the size of your Fatsia @ViewAhead, one of those tall fleece covers with a drawstring at the bottom might protect your plant until the squirrels lose interest.

We had glorious sunshine again yesterday so spent three hours or so in the garden working and then an hour or so planning aka “sitting and simply soaking up the sunshine”. By mid afternoon, even in the sun, it was cooling down rapidly.

All our ferns are now cut back and I made/repaired hazel supports for some of our roses. Am also making a very low hazel hurdle to mark one edge of a woodland border. We have inherited ground cover ivy and the new mini hurdle will stop it spreading into my woodland planting (or rather act as a warning system for me that it’s beginning to encroach). Otherwise as long as it all looks ok as we wander by, I forget about it and suddenly the ivy is everywhere.

Work today so the only gardening will be in my head :ideaIPB:

Hard frost this morning in Bexleyheath at 6am.

Bus hopefully when I get home about 4pm it should be quite warm to do a couple of jobs in the garden.

Is the shredded Laurel good in the compost then @LunarSea? I have a big pile of it waiting to be ‘processed’.

I’ve had vine weevils with potted Heuchera but thought it was less likely with ground-planted ones @Songbird, so that’s disappointing for you. Lovely plants.

@Plantminded , the grubs were really tiny. I’ve only seen the adult version, so thinking they are vine weevils then? Trust them to attack my favourite Apple Crisp heuchera. Thanks for the advice. I shall inspect them daily from now on!

@AuntyRach , yes our other heucheras are all in the ground and yes, they are lovely plants with their tall spires of flowers in the summer. Not to worry, battle has begun

It’s about 5m tall and the same wide! Quite sizeable.

@Songbird, heucheras root really easily, so if you take some cuttings from the left-over top growth, you should be able to salvage something.

I've had them a lot in the past and use Provado vine weevil killer in my hanging baskets. The grubs have an orange head. Luckily I don't have a problem at the moment. Fingers crossed.

The little grubs I saw didn’t have an orange head but maybe they were babies.? Only seen the adult version.Ill need to get some deterrent like yours if they prevail. Thanks again for advise.

Hubby helped me dig up the last currant bush i couldn't have done it by myself. He's got to put all of the roots in bags to take to the recycling centre tomorrow.

Technically this is not "in the garden" but it is gardening related...

I quickly popped to my local garden centre during my lunch break and bought two ferns ("polypodium vulgare"). When I got back, i found that a very young potted rose had been left at my doorstep!

Such a sweet gesture. Probably one of my neighbours had more cuttings that rooted than they were able to accommodate. They will have sussed out that I love roses (my front garden is full of them), and thought they would leave it for me, the same way a baby or a puppy is left outside someone's doorstep in films

What they don't know is that I am a bit of a rose snob (I only like some types) and also that I don't have much space for more roses.. On the other hand now I feel an obligation to nurture and look after it, so I am conflicted

I have a cute pink BB rifle that has a feet per second speed low enough to not kill a squirrel but will give them a nasty sting on the backside. Sometimes they train well and when they don't I go out and chase them! I probably look like an oversized yappy dog when that happens
