@redstar I looked up your Fastnacht and it's of German origin and means Eve of the fast so an excuse to eat all the stuff that's banned during Lent. French speakers call it Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday).

You've done well @Ladybird4 and now deserve a good restful night. Enjoy your pancakes in the morning.

Did the dogs get pancakes too @Penny_Forthem ?

I meant to sow tomatoes and chillies today but first had to clear and clean the annex for the plumber who was coming to fix a leak in the mains water pipe. The stop tap and meter are outside under a manhole cover which is lined with polystyrene and foam to keep out frosts. I had to prune the viburnum Snowball that someone planted handily right next to it. Then I got a bit lopper happy and tackled a buddleia and the lavender that has sprawled across a path.

Back indoors to sow the toms and the new grow light kit has a furrin plug. OH has reorganised all the leccy stuff and I do not know where and then I spent ages trying to work out where my heat mats had been put.

I'll be sowing tomatoes and chillies next Tuesday then. Other things to do in the next week.

A very good morning everyone. Oh my but the sky here was just breathtaking this morning. I've posted a picture below. Quite awesome - next best thing to the Northern Lights.

Pancakes delish! @Penny_Forthem, such lovely dogs! Have you worn them out with a huge walk? @Obelix-Vendée I just used my bedroom windowsill to germinate my tomatoes on and they are now 5cm tall. I have to work out where to put all the little pots when I prick them out. I think it is still too cold to put them in the greenhouse. I'll check the Max Min thermometer in there later.

              Good morning all!!

Ash Wednesday! What to give up for 6 weeks???!! Sweets, I guess. Does that include chocolate? Hmmm. Sigh!

Bravo to you @Ladybird4 for your help at the funeral. I hope the pancakes were just as delicious this morning - now you can run the calories off!!

Those dogs of yours @Penny_Forthem are just adorable. I like pancakes buttered with lemon juice and sugar too. Just the way Mum served them. Definitely not a Nutella fan! I think your version of drop scones, is what we call pikelets/griddle scones in NZ. A thicker pancake batter, smaller in size, eaten hot; buttered with jam! Lovely when you get home from school with a hot chocolate or tea.

I did!!! @Obelix-Vendée Tomatoes and peppers. One hot one called Banana (Mild and Tangy) I have grown it before and it wasn't mild nor tangy. It was very hot! but hey - different soil!! Ha!

Three small barrowful of topsoil yesterday - I'd like to do some more today, which is forecast to be very sunny followed by 6 days of rain and drizzle. The meridionals here will have long faces. They can't handle more than two days of rain!! Oooh là là, là-là!!

                Good morning all.

We are now in Eastbourne with OH's family. There had been a horrible looking accident near Tunbridge Wells, both cars smashed up. I hope the drivers were OK. Always makes me feel wobbly.

@Ladybird4 your sky is gorgeous but haven't you heard "red sky in the morning shepherd's warning"? I hope you don't have rain.

We had pancakes last night with lemon and sugar. OH's grandson is coeliac so they were gluten free. I wouldn't have known the difference.

Today we will be meeting my sister in a pub for lunch. She lives about 40 mins from here.

Woke to mist this morning. I finished filling the green bins yesterday afternoon, and they have already been emptied this morning. The other recyclers came at 7.15 yesterday morning. Hopefully all these workers get to finish earlier in the afternoon, and enjoy a bit of sun.
Shrove Tuesday / Mardi Gras / Carnevale over for another year. I suppose I should think about giving up something for Lent. Always used to as a child, usually chocolate. My sister always makes a huge effort, often sweet stuff, bread and pastries, and alcohol. She is a churchgoer, but also appreciates the benefit of the weight loss!
I suppose I could give up alcohol till Easter, but as I’m already trying to lose weight and reduce my BP/cholesterol, it doesn’t feel as if I’d be making a sacrifice for the right reasons. Maybe ration my internet use to less hours per day. That could hurt!
I have a few plants to get into the ground, so with a fortnights respite before the green bins need to be full again, I shall prioritise that. One clump of ground cover on the slope to remove, and then I think I’d better leave the rest until next year, in case any birds are planning to nest in the shrubs. I’ve seen a couple of blackbirds nests in the past, elsewhere in the garden, just above ground level, woven into the lower stalks of bamboo plants.
                  Hope everyone’s day goes well.

We didn’t get round to having pancakes yesterday, not sure why, so we may delay Lent another day. Easter moves around anyway so one day which way :noidea: Not that we “do” Lent anyway but still nice to follow old traditions. Fans of lemon and sugar here

Having spent a long day Monday in the office (me) and driving/visiting his Mum (OH) we both wanted to stretch our legs yesterday. We did one of usual circuits if Sutton Park. The weather was glorious, a real feeling of Spring in the air and so mild. We are so lucky having such a beautiful place to walk just a short drive away. Afternoon was a haircut for me and then various HW tasks.

Feeling a bit weary this morning as haven’t been able to drop off the last couple of nights so ended up getting up and reading, browsing the internet until the early hours. Not sure why, just one of those phases that happens every now and then.

Weather looks glorious again today so planning to get into the garden. I have a bit more tidying to do, some hazel plant supports to finish and a wisteria to prune. I also need to do a repair to the Wisteria wire supports. I managed to snip through an important wire whilst doing a quick summer prune. We did a temporary fix but need to strengthen it. Once I’ve done all these little jobs, I really must get a move on and start creating my new vegetable/fruit patch. Now the weather is warming, I can start moving out some of the current residents (mainly herbs and a few roses). You’ve been very industrious @Tui34 I might need to fly you over to sort out my new veggie patch

Glad you arrrived safely @Busy-Lizzie and agree it’s always unsettling and sad to see the aftermath of a bad accident

Fabulous sky @Ladybird4 looks quite dramatic and hopefully not portent of bad weather and just a reward for all your kindness yesterday

Good morning all. It's sunny here but cold. Better than rain tho that will come back this weekend and has been advanced to Friday.

All our windowsills are outside @Ladybird4 so no good for sowing but OK for bringing on once temps improve. OH is outside clearing away my piles from yesterday whilst I soften leeks for a frittata. I shall sow some beets in trays this pm and some carrots in a tall pot to keep off carrot flies. If OH clears the bed I can also plant some shallots.

The locals here are similar @Tui34, as tho more than a couple of days of rain is a personal insult or a deliberate mental block.

I don't see that you need to give anything up @Ergates. It's just another form of crowd control imposed by a very dubious bunch of men in the late 4th century. Do what feels right for you. We shall be celebrating the spring equinox which has more significance for gardening.

When we first moved here @Busy-Lizzie the powers that be decided speed was a major factor in road accidents, as well as alcohol and drugs of course, and far too frequent in this Department. One way to bring it home was to park smashed up cars on roundabouts with a sign saying Speed Kills. The one I passed on the way to patch group was there for almost a year.

I don't think there's been a major shift in accident figures.

                          Hello all!

Finally managed to log in here, after our son installed something clever on this Chromebook so that it's still supported with updates. It's 10 years old, which I'm told is a good age... but I resent the built-in obsolescence of computers and phones these days. If it still works, I want to use it... and now I can, thanks to a man with a screwdriver and a lot more knowledge of these things than I have!

We arrived back from our UK trip yesterday, in beautiful sunshine. Unfortunately today is damp and a bit "raw", so I've been catching up with paperwork, shopping and washing, and will hope for better gardening weather soon. It had clearly been windy while I was away, because the little plastic growhouse has finally subsided into a small heap of twisted metal and torn plastic. Not the best time of year for it to happen - but I'm looking forward to choosing a replacement as soon as I can. Bigger would be better. I must see what I can afford from the gardening budget.

@redstar Henry VIII didn't like fish so he declared chicken to be a fish.

Oh has a Chromebook @Liriodendron but not yet quite as old as yours. He's happy with its limitations but I need proper WORD and EXCEL and Outlook for managing the patch club info so I have a proper laptop PC. Had to buy a new one recently and went for the 32mb RAM version as newer apps and systems take up more and more resources which is why my old one was becoming grindingly slow.

I have sown 4 kinds of beetroot in a tray. I did want to plant out my shallots but the undergardener has been out to see the doc to get a repeat prescription and ask about his new dodgy shoulder so he'll be taking my place at the physio's to get that sorted. He can remove the clumps of grass form the shallot bed tomorrow then.

We have blossom just opening on the apricot. I hope it warms up a bit for the pollinators so we get loads of fruit. They are luscious.

A productive day. I’ve cleared the last clump of shrubs that I had my eye on, and still managed to get two lots of laundry done.OH took down a couple of scraggy trees that had outlived their space, and has shredded most of that, plus some of my prunings. He also did a bit of painting before heading out to the garden. Very satisfying. My back is having a moan now, but I don’t think it’s anything that a decent sit down won’t cure.

Good afternoon, no pancakes here, I don't mind one or two but OH is not a fan so we don't bother.
Volunteer day at Capel Manor today, a bit mad really as I have loads to do here and on the Allotments, but I like to keep in touch and it's over 3 weeks since I last went.
Cold start but glorious day in the end, car said it was +15 when I left. Too early for Toms for me, it's not the starting off but where to move on once they are potted up and need more space. I only grow sweet pepper, and a couple of plants are enough so I buy plants, and don't sow seed.
