I haven’t been in a cafe since Covid restrictions were introduced. Stopped going and never got going again. Somehow, the government’s drawing our attention to all that hand washing put me off the idea of going into a public space and drinking from a cup that perhaps hadn’t been properly cleaned and was served by someone who perhaps didn’t have the strictest sense of personal hygiene. Haven’t had a meal out either. And it’s saved me a lot of money too. :)

@Tidemark, that was just a random example. The point is data is control and the people doing the controlling are often unelected and unaccountable. It is pure folly to give up freedoms just because the first steps don’t bother you or seem important.

Your bank could close your account tomorrow and you would not even have the right to know the reason. Collection of internet data allows this type of abuse. Who gathers it, who it’s sold on to, what is done with it - these are issues that are going to dramatically alter individuals’ freedoms.

Headline on the BBC, “BBC travels out to blistered and burnt oil tanker in North Sea”
and continues “A BBC inspection of the oil tanker……”
Why? In whose universe does it make any sense to send a reporter out in a boat, with a cameraman and presumably a sound engineer as well, to record a piece of film showing the damage that I’m sure is readily available from sources that have a legitimate reason to be be out there anyway? What a waste of licence payers money.

I think we lost out freedom years ago, you cant go anywhere without being watched by a camera, and its all in the name of safety.
In other words, its all for our benefit, just like all the other restrictive legislation they bring in.
It will only get worse as more technology becomes available, I think the general public is controlled far too much already, but they dont seem to be able to control the ones that they should be.

                  Not tonight you shouldn't!

You need to compete with the Blood Moon eclipse that will be out tonight - best time to see it is between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.

From what I read about most people and their mobiles is that they get an anxiety syndrome if they stray more than two feet from their mobiles.

Two feet! That’s pushing it, @shiney. I think it needs to be kept on one’s person, preferably in one’s hand, elbow bent, eyes down. Otherwise … you might miss something!

                      :hate-shocked:

That explains why I have problems sleeping - I leave my mobile downstairs when I go to bed.

Publicly, it is all in the name of safety - but privately, it is all about money and control.

Take the new AI cameras that they have spying on motorists... that is all well and good, but we can't use that same technology to spot boats in the channel (from either side)? Drive a 12 year old diesel in London and you'll be found for the fine instantly... yet hack someone to bits with a machete, or blow their brains out with a gun, and seemingly you can disappear into the ether.

Or … be a regular bank customer and have to jump through hoops to move money about, but be an oligarch and no questions asked as you launder your ill-gotten gains through the City of London.
