We are very fortunate in that on the rare occasion one of these sort of things slips through our vetting process, we have the best members any forum could ask for, who report it to us really quickly. Please never underestimate just how helpful it can be reporting something to us.

 

Thank you @Sheal. Oddly, that is the car that started my love of Jaguar... I watched that in my youth and instantly fell in love with the car.

My first Jaguar ownership was an X-type... I owned a VW Passat that was as reliable as a politician and also drank like an alcoholic at a free bar. When it broke down at work one night, a colleague gave me a lift home in his XJ40 and I was smitten. Within six weeks, I bought this one:



That then led to this one, which looked nice but turned out to be rotten as a pear and needed almost a full electrical rebuild and suspension/steering rebuild - basically the same car that Ruby is:



Then latterly, this one, which despite the horrendous reputation, was actually a pretty good car for us:

Ooooh, I like a Saab too - a friend had a 9000 CS Turbo and it was a proper bit of kit... very comfy car with a good bit of oomph behind it.

Jags are one of those that get under your skin - sadly, they are often abused or wholly misunderstood, so end up needing a hell of a lot of work to have them right, which in turn gives them an undeserved bad reputation.
