Custard Apples ?

    Anyone tried growing one, just found some info. saying that once mature can withstand temps as low a -2 degrees C (so not at all hardy). But I am going to try them.

    Bought a cheap propagator yesterday, so I have sown, Custard Apple, Kiwi, Golden Rain Tree, Figs, Olives, 2 Morello Cherry pips, oh and 3 sweet million tomato plants (to elongate my cropping period!! :D ).

    YOUV'E GOT ME ON THAT ONE. no I have never grown custard apples Do grow a related plant Asimina Triloba (sorry dont know the common name) which I believe comes from Florida. Good Luck!
    Golden rain tree?.... Koelreuteria?
    Figs? do you mean rubber plants. Ficus sp.

    The seeds from a fig, but yes , it is a ficus.

    Koelreuteria is correct, supposedly they are a problem in Florida, as they grow so easily and quickly.

    The other half bought some Custard apples before christmas, and I kept a few seeds. So I thought I would try them.

    I was under the impresion that figs bought from the greengrocer are seedless. My brown turkey is.
    I've got a Koelreuteria I grew from seed some years ago, but it doesn't flower very well, but it did in 2003 with the hot summer that year. however I know of one in someone elses garden nearby which flowers well ever year.

    My seeds come from a tree that was bought from a garden centre in this country that beared fruit last season, the fig was left on the tree, shrivelled up, and I was *given* it ..... And I did empty loads of seeds out of it.

    Worth a try, nothing to lose.

    Let us know how you get on I would be interested.
    Koelreuteria is I believe a Chinese tree which was introduced to the warmer parts of the USA.

    If they germinate (because I've sown loads, hoping some will take) I'll let you know, I won't have room for loads, so may look for some homes if all works out :D .

    Nathan what fig is it, the brown Turkey ? I have a standard tree and a bush in my chicken paddock, was 8 ft and and wide, till a 8x6 conmplete shed tobbled on it in last gales and rested there, now not so happy. Was going to cut it to ground anyway and shed needed removing but not quite so drastic. lol But I used to get crop in greenhouse and know someone gets loads outside in our village. I take cuttings from them, root very fast and easily.

    Nathan is that a root out the bottom of the pot already, looks like a strong grower that will need a lot of root room.

    It has produced 4 or 5 small leaves now as well, the leaves do resemble apple tree leaves.

    I thought the same as you, and I will be potting it up, I think the root that is out the bottom of the pot could possibly be the tap root.

    Yes I thought the same, problem is plants that grow tap roots rearly do well in pots, perhaps thats why we dont see it much. Still try as deeper pot as you can.
