No woman lives in the real world, Victoria, otherwise why do they get married:heehee::heehee:

I do, in truth, think la femme are more intelligent than la homme. But I am an optimist otherwise why would I garden?:D

Too true ARMANDII ... I've only been with my t'other half 44 years so what would I know about men ...

I garden because my t'other half knows nada about it ... no, fair dinkums, in the last ten years since we retired he has become knowledgeable about tropical gardening ... and even to the point of kmowing the Latin names, bless him ... :love30:

I always thought the Welsh language spoken by a woman was really beautiful. My wife could speak the Welsh and when we crossed over the border and stopped at a pub we'd get a meal or a drink. The locals would stop speaking English because we "English" were there. Then my wife would listen and tell me what they were saying. They must have thought we were mad because we'd be chuckling and giggling over what they were saying about us.:heehee::heehee:

      Hi Armandii.
the green house has no windows , as my idea was to get lots of hot humidity and it worked great ... brumeliad , calatheas , monastera and bananas just love it , I would attach some picture if it would have been more easy , but it back fired in some how ....I`ve been build the greenhouse last March ....so don`t know how will react in winter, will the nice humidity will transform in horrible mould ? is the humidity too high for my cactus?
today I`ve insulate all with bubble wrap and installed a fan heating with termostat.

Hi Sal, you sound like you've had great success with your plants and you're happy with your Greenhouse, but what you done with yours is to use it as a Hothouse and there's a major difference between the two!! Ventilation is vital during the Winter otherwise all sorts of fungal diseases will appear. Heating is fine but you will need some sort of ventilation.

thank you Armandii , this is the main point for me to post the question , don`t have much expirience with it and I make every tips gold , I really don`t want to heading to a failure......My plan was to reduce the watering to once a month and keep to a certain temperature , I will try to open the doors on nice day .......I can install an air fan or a window very easily , but my point is that when january comes and the air is just dump and cold , will it really help my plants? isn`t the point of all to keep the plants at an high temperature then outside? Has any of you got any experience in overwinter tender plants in a green house?

Hi Sal, well as you've pointed out, damp and cold are your two possible problems. Your thoughts about having to keep a higher temperature than outside, if it's freezing, are also right. But during a Winter all you are attempting to do is to keep the plants ticking over until Spring and warmer days,so you only need to keep a steady low temperature.
Your most vulnerable time will be mostly night time when the temperature drops to freezing or below.
If you can fit a window with a automatic opener that would definitely help ventilation problem although it is not the complete answer. All Greenhouse people check daily on their plants just to check all is okay, keeping an eye on temperature and damp, which is what you're going to have to do. Your plan sounds fine, reduce watering, an even minimum temperature. Have you researched as to what minimum temperature you need?

As for not wanting to head for a failure, nobody wants to do that! But we would be surprised if we had 100% success of getting plants through the Winter. So brace yourself for some failure of some sort, and then maybe should you get everything through the Winter safely you can give yourself a pat on the back, and shout it out on GC!!

I overwinter quite a lot of plants, mostly frost tender stuff in the greenhouse and more tropical in the conservatory.

I ventilate the greenhouse on all reasonable days, via auto vents and have a heater set at about 4C.
Humidity really is the big problem I find in the greenhouse during winter, and its true we do get a lot of days when opening the vents is totally useless, due to dampness outside.
The only help then comes in the form of a circulation fan moving the air around, it can make a difference.
But all this cost money to run, so you need to make choices.

Another problem is overcrowding which makes the air circulation even more important.

Hi Armandii , thank you so much for the good information , an fan heating is now in place , helping me with the frosty night ..and usually in windy day i leave the doors open to dry out the water ...
if honestly I think the most soft of all the plants is the cavendish bananas and the heliconias, but as we know in nature they get in a dormant state during the dry season , most of the plants I`ve got should hold to a -2 , many other are hardy seedling and the only one I`m not sure are the bromeliads and the aloe , but I`m organise my house to bring them inside even if I`m tempted to try them hardyness as i personal think that many plants are hardyer that what we think.

Hi Pete......yes what you saying makes sence and at the moment the green house is overcroweded , plus dump and cactus don`t reall like each other ...I start to think that my mother in law is right when she ask me why I`m waisting my time with flower and plants and not planting all with onion and potatoes ...lol...Pete have you got any expirience with bromeliads!!! as they love humidity and don`t really performe great indoor , plus got 3 paradise flower , heliconia ,calathea and monastera who are in the green house soil and they now too big to go back inside , I had monostera and paradise flower back in Italy and they holded light frost and -2 .

Sal,Bromeliads, apart from pineapple are not something I have grown a lot of, but I understand there are a few, Puyas, bilbergias, for instance that are reasonably hardy, its a varied collection of species, from almost hardy to hot house plants.

Most desert cacti will take some frost if dry, but then again there are exceptions.
My experience of paradise flower, (BOP), is it will take cold down to almost zero but damages below zero if damp.
Monstera probably similar, Heliconia and calathea, I would keep fairly warm, above 10C at the very least.

In many cases its a matter of knowing the species of a certain plant you are growing, you cant actually group things under one heading.
