Members Roses 2011

I've just ben cursing today Keinnaf, I have a lovely rambler 'Bobby James' growing along a fence alongside a busy road, mainly to stop kids climbing over into the garden:D and it does work, I keep it tied to the fence so it doesn't stab any passers by, a couple of days ago noticed it was covered in blooms and thought how lovely it was going to look, today went down and the flippin council have been down the whole hill( part of which is allotments) and chopped the whole lot back as they've been cutting the hedge, not a single flower left, don't think they realise its my garden, so have to wait till next year now, and will have to call in the council and make it clear I'll cut my own hedge thankyou very much, so they don't do it again next year.

I have another Felicia in the front which climbs an 8 foot wall and spills over onto the patio above. Apart from flowering their heads off, like many Hybrid Musks they have an intense and pleasant fragrance which wafts all around for yards.

how annoying Simbad, write and complain now and then remind them next year. we have fireberry bushes in the front garden which would seriously injure anyone trying to climb in (and prickle all the school children going past if I don't keep it under control) I don't mind roses in the front because my girls don't play out there.

 

That looks wonderful Kevin, your planters look fab I've just got to find somewhere for that rose its on my wish list.
Now funny you should say that Keinnaf tried phoning today but couldn't get through so have just sent an e-mail, think they may be getting quite a few complaints, been out again today in their hedge cutting machine!!! (can't remember proper name) and heard a man over the road telling them off for cutting his hedge!!! don't know what they're playing at don't seem to know what they're doing.
Yes we've had quite a bit of trouble with people(not just kids) coming in the garden,had a whole laurel hedge pinched once!!!! the area where the fence is is in our little wood so quite secluded and you can't see it from the house also opposite where a lot of teenagers hang about at night.

I think that I originally thought 'I must get a 'couple' of roses'..... and with thousands to choose from, where can it possibly go wrong?
Which is how ended up with about 40.

Kevin, your roses are all stunning. We don't get 'named' roses here.

Other than quite a few mini roses I've had for years and years, I only grow two ... my Avatar which is Oranges & Lemons, a big blousey, heavily scented beauty and Sunseeker which was bought eight years ago or so at B&Q as an 18" patio rose. It was for years until I planted it in the ground and now it is a climber 2 meters tall and 2 meters wide but retains it's tiny leaves and small flowers. I couldn't believe this cluster on one stem ... I gave up counting in the wind but there must be 70 plus buds ... and is beautifully scented also.

I just love your Rhapsody in Blue. I did bring one here from the IoW but it sadly died on me last year.

Here is probably the last picture I took of it with my Oranges & Lemons ...

 

Lovely roses, Kevin, and you've photographed them beautifully too. There is something about old roses and David Austin's varieties, isn't there? It's a bit like a delicious box of chocolates. Impossible to have just one or two; before you know it you've sampled the lot.

 

What a shame, are there good nurseries in Portugaal for you to get another to replace it ?

I think i'd ask friends and family to bring one over for you when they next visit :WINK1:

They are the most gorgeous purple colour but when displayed next to pink, red and yellow themes they look dirty and grey - place with other purples and they're amazing !
