Many thanks for the kind words.

I have now made 54 circles, but after calculating the varying thickness of them, I still need to make 6 more!

I put the base post in the ground yesterday, and will hopefully find time to finish varnishing the circles this coming weekend. I have stupidly worked out that it is going to take longer to make this next piece than it did the obelisk/totem pole.

The circles have also already given me another idea for the next sculpture, which whilst using circles will be very different in both form and design :)

I guess that with the thread title, that I really should put this in here. :D

After approx 75hrs work, the next sculpture is finished. I can't say that I am currently all that taken with it, but will give it a few days before deciding as to whether I should take it back down again.

I think it's great Eddie. Why not try siting it somewhere else, it might make a difference. :)

Are you a member of UKWorkshop by chance Eddie J? My other half says he's seen some of the pictures you posted up on there.

I can not believe you work OAK by hand, truly amazing and hard work

          Admire you
(can not afford to scrap :-) twenty acre estate with half a million quid of oakwood stuctures) the Oak shed with arches is worth about 30k alone :-)

I have thought about swapping it with the bird bath position, but I am still drawn by my original idea, which was to lay it horizontally, as though it was floating just above above the ground. I guess that you should always trust your instincts. :)

Very very rarely, as I don't find it a particularly friendly forum. Ultimatehandyman is far more friendly. :)

Oddly I quite enjoy it, and making the totem pole/obelisk actually helped me this week at work when I had to create a very difficult joint for an oak frame that I am currently constructing for someone. The cut which would have in the past been difficult, suddenly became very easy. :)

Guess what? Even I can get it badly wrong, and on this occasion the winner was gravity!

I got a call to say that there had been a very loud bang, and that the spiral had gone over!!!

In all honesty, I should have known better and had made some very basic errors in it's construction. I came close to throwing the towel in, but the word defeated is not in my vocabulary and I am driven by challenge, so the Mark Two version is now well underway.
The rebuild is actually quite a challenge as I have to plug each previously drilled hole before I can start again. There is also damage to sort out, but I can deal with that. :)

Oddly, I have also moved it to an aspect of the garden that I'd never previously thought about. The area is pretty lifeless and nothing much grows there, so moving the sculpture has made a whole new dimension to te area, and the sculpture now also looks much better. It's also reasonably close to recently rescued cork screw hazel, which has now got my brain ticking even further! :)

I like it there Eddy. The light and dark aspect as well as the straightness of the tree trunks behind do it justice. :dbgrtmb:

Not quite as big as yours, but I know how you feel. I'd spent ages carving a spoon with a cage in the handle, I carved and freed 2 wooden balls within the cage only to have a huge split develop the full length of the spoon:DOH:

              Sorry to hear that. :(

It's one of the things that always leaves me in awe about any form of carving. I'm always impressed that someone can complete something without it breaking or going wrong. I also don't believe that the scale of an object matters, the sick depressing feeling is just the same when it all goes wrong.

Pencil lead carving always amazes me. I hope that posting these links is okay, I just think that this is amazing. http://toldart.posterous.com/ and this http://www.facebook.com/pages/TOLDart/217684178256304

              Example..
