I have just bought some seeds for this hardy perennial - but what I can't seem to discover is whether it will flower this year if I sow the seeds now, or whether it will not flower till the 2nd summer. Can anyone help?

Do you mean Papaver Orientale? If so, it might be a bit late now for it to bloom this year - I have loads of them and they usually bloom about May/June. But it's always worth a try - who knows, you might get them blooming later in the year and worse case scenario, they'll certainly bloom next year!

Edited to add - I've moved this thread to somewhere more appropriate.

Oh - and thanks for moving my post to a better place - it's my first time here and am a little lost !

Hi, SG is right your oriental poppy probably won't flower this year but obviously will next. The strange thing with them is that they'll grow, flower, and then die back completely, and regrow in the Autumn.

Yes, they provide a bit of greenery in Winter. I love them, despite them only blooming for a few days or weeks at the most.

Hi for now buy some annual ones lots of choice just about the right time to sow plant in modules or where you want them to grow as they hate root disturbance ( hate being pricked out you will lose over 50%

Although you wouldn't think it, they are quite a good cut flower, but you need to dip the ends of the stems in boiling water.
