I'm not all that sure, Ziggy, that this bug is Thread orientated:scratch: I was on the "FROM THE OLD BOOK" thread when it happened last night, but when it happened today I was writing a long personal message on the forum so it doesn't happen just on a Thread. Besides there are a lot of Sticky Threads hugely bigger than "FROM THE OLD BOOK". This is a hang-over from the change and we'll possibly hear from others when and if it happens to them - a bit like "Pass the Parcel"! I don't think this is going to be easy to track down but hopefully I'll be proved wrong.:cry3:

I don't think GC is going to refresh the page by itself whilst you are just looking at it (i.e. not pressing any buttons). I reckon something external has to cause the page to be refreshed. Whether that is related to being logged out, or not, I don't know. It might be a specific advert hosted on the page though. Or something else on your system.

I'm definitely not a expert in this field, Kristen, but I'm pretty sure that it's not been triggered by something on my system as it has happened to Ziggy too. Actually, the page has refreshed itself several times while I been on the Forum even when I've been browsing, but again I don't think it's linked to my system. As for it being an advert that might have triggered the refresh it's a thought, although why hasn't it happened to other people:scratch: but like I said I'm definitely not an expert in this matter:dunno:

Actually, there aren't any adverts on this page - I should have checked that before Doh! so its not that.

I am an expert in this field! but I have no idea what's causing the problem :(

It is possible for the page to be built so that it performs some action - such as checking for newer posts on the thread, and refreshing. But I haven't seen it do that. It could be a bug, so I haven't seen it but you and Ziggy have circumstances that cause it.

It might be that you and Ziggy have some OPTION set differently to other folk (lets assume its an obscure option, set to a value other folk would not choose). That might have even have happened by something in the migration making an "informed"choice, for example.

It could be something else installed on your machine, interacting with the site - perhaps in a way that exacerbates some bug in the forum software, or just causes the refresh to happen (without the forum software doing anything).

It might be the combination of your Browser/version and the forum software (and perhaps coupled with other things installed on your machine) that is triggering some bug.

Its not possible that its the GC Server "sending" you a new page. Your browser would have to "ask" for a new page (but the forum software could be programmed to do that, as I described above)

These things are never easy to debug. The more examples there are the easier it becomes to spot a trend and diagnose the problem, as well as the more effort that is put into tracking the problem. We spend many-man-days tracking such things down for our clients.

The only real suggestion I have is to download and install a different browser. My choices, in order, would be Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. Pick the first of those that you are not currently using. Do not change it to be your default browser (stick with your normal browser for your other browsing)

If that still reloads the page it is almost certainly something in the page - because it is unlikely that some third party software that is installed on your PC will interact the same way with a different browser.

Trying GC on a completely different machine would help - e.g. a Work PC or one at a friend's house. If that does it too its almost certainly related to your account on GC, if not its most probably specifically something to do with your own PC

I'm no expert, most definitely, but I would like to make a comment that won't cure the problem but may help.

      ARMANDII,
if you intend to make a long post then type it in Word and then when you have completed just copy and paste into GC. That also saves you making silly mistakes, which I have done, of pressing 'Preview' and thinking I have posted it.

      Kristen,
I have an advert at the top of the thread.

The more that's written on this Thread and the more I read the comments and advice on it the more baffled I become:scratch:

Kristen's expertise and advice, [thanks Kristen], have made me aware just how difficult it is to pin down, identify, and rectify a bug and particularly this one. I tried tying Kristen's expertise with whatever logic I have to the the circumstances of the bug and basically felt like I was standing at a cross roads with a billion roads leading off in every direction, and no sign to direct me:what: One question leads to five, five questions lead to 50 and 50 questions lead to ..........:gaagh:

My computer is less than a year old, after my old one died a rather dramatic end, it runs Windows 7, is a high end one and with more power than I really need. I don't have Word but instead use Scribus and Open Office. I use Chrome. latest edition, and found it's quick and very stable. If the problem persists I will swap over to Firefox to see if it changes anything.

When the change over took place, I, like a lot of others, sat back and waited. Then when it was back on line I just tried to find out what was different and since there were no notes to set or change anything, I didn't change anything. So no values or options have been changed from the default settings.

I keep mentioning this, but when the forum came back on line the advanced posting page and the message page wasn't presenting the ones it is now. The ones I was presented with were much more restricted and without the smilies and font options, did anyone else have the same. I didn't get the fully functioning pages for posts and messages until I suffered the bug for the very first time three days ago and reset my password. Why??

I have had the same experience as Pete but that was not long after the change and it only occurred once.
