I've no idea how good their stuff is, but I was in Asda today and they have an offer on 70L bags of multi purpose compost.
    3 bags for £10

I'm sure it's no where near as good as the John Innes stuff, but thought I'd mention it in case it's helpful to anyone.

And also in bargains, I picked up a book in a charity shop that I think will be really useful for me
A-Z of popular garden plants - for just £1
Even if it's rubbish, I can just take it back, and I've donated a quid to the local hospice. Can't lose!

Wyevale is 4 bags for £12 or £13 at the moment or something like that - you have to be a Club Member, but you can do that there-and-then (and that's a named brand multi-purpose - can't remember about Asda, but it rings a bell in my memory that their stuff did not fare well in the Which? test a year or so back)

I think B&Q came out best?

    There's probably a thread somewhere!

B&M Bargains are selling large bags (50litre-ish) of multi-purpose compost for £1.99, so you can get five bags for a tenner. It's too coarse for seeds or seedlings, but I'm using it for planting (shrubs etc), growing spuds in bags, I've also dug a few bags into the veg patch and I can't complain so far...

That's 210 litres for £10, or 4.76 pence per litre.

Wickes are doing 4 x 75 litre bags for £13, so that's 4.33 pence per litre and it doesn't have twigs, splinters, stones, other deleterious material in it, nor does it go mouldy like some makes do - I don't know what the stuff Asda sells is like, but all my seeds, transplants have been in Wickes compost for several years now.

But I do know that if you find split bags at Wickes inside another large clear bag, whether stickered as reduced or not, Wickes have standard reductions to apply at the checkout for damaged bags (also sand, concrete, etc.).

My last 4 (damaged) bags of 75 litre potting compost cost me £6.

If that's 50 litre bags, at that price it's only 0.0035 pence/litre cheaper than the Wickes stuff which is fine for seedlings (and you say B&M's is not). When I last looked in a B&M store I dismissed all their compost on sale as being available cheaper elsewhere.

      .

Yes, Wickes is proper compost, whatever the price!

Some of the others that I have purchased have raw wood shavings/splinters in them!

      once bitten twice shy!

I know it makes economic sense to buy the larger bags of compost - but I for one can't lift a 75 litre bag (with the pins in my back, I can barely manage 60 litres) and whilst there's nearly always someone to help me put them in the car, there's no-one the other end to help me out with them since, for some unfathomable reason, Mr. F'smum refuses to return from The States just to help me out with my compost (which is damned inconsiderate if you ask me!). I did buy a couple of larger bags once, thinking I could 'slit and decant' from bags in car to garden - in the event, with the time it took and mess it made, I decided I'd have to stick to the smaller bags in future - and pay a fortune into the (not so much of a) bargain :gaagh:

We use the Wickes compost and it is very good. I'm off tomorrow to get another 4 bags. That will make 32 bags so far this spring (2,400 litres :rolleyespink:) and we use it as seed compost, for doing hanging baskets, potting on etc.

Wickes always load it into my car for me and Mrs shiney and myself just slide it out of the boot onto a wheelbarrow (the boot has a flat lip - not fat lip :heehee:).

We use so much compost because of preparing plants for our charity sale when we open the garden. We never have any trouble with their compost. :dbgrtmb:

Its weight would depend on many factors its moisture content and density , but as a guesstimate I would say 22 Kg for a 75L bag.( so you can easily carry 3 under each arm and balance one on your head :D )
After the other compost threads on GC , I have bought the Wickes 4 for £13 . It appears to be a very high quality compost , not full of stones and shredded wood like the Westland I have just used.

      20Kg (just weighed one).

If you find any damaged bags at Wickes they will be reduced at the checkout to about the same cost of buying 4 bags and getting the multisave. As they are always in a much larger bag - 750mm x 1000mm that you could get 3 x 75 litre bags in - they'll be easy to decant from your car boot at home.

Someone's had a letter published in Garden News, waxing lyrical about Wickes Compost! Hope it doesn't cause a Delia effect and have them sell out, now I've found out about it.

      :(

      I'm looking for composted bark.
Does anyone know where I could find 70lt bags? My local garden centre used to sell it, but not now :(
