Guess who was sitting on the car when I got home.

Bit concerned as its now sitting under the hedge and there are rats & badgers abroad.

Torn between letting it take its chances and putting it in a box for the night:what:

I want to too Ruth, but there is this advice from the other, other forum :cry3:

Baby & Injured Wild Birds - PLEASE READ! - BirdForum

All I want to do is cuddle it & have it sit on my shoulder at work.

It could be a young bird Ziggy, I would see how it fairs overnight,by then you'll know whether it's parents are around. If not I'd be inclined to take it to the local RSPCA or a bird sanctuary tomorrow. Don't take it to a vets, they'll probably put it down.

Ziggy your bird is a baby Collared Dove and has probably left the nest a bit too early. It no doubt felt safer on top of your car plus would have got some warmth from the heat the roof would have collected from the sun.

I missed this post so hope you have managed to get it in a box as i would think that the local cats would have it if the foxes don't.

I will have to read the info that has been given by that bird forum as i know they always say to leave the birds to their fate but if it was me i would have to do something:mute:

It's lovely that you cared so much Ziggy but I feel it is probably meant to be, had same predicament with a Kitty 3 yrs ago now he has his feet firmly under the table. See what happens if it comes back maybe

If I picked up all the baby jackdaws that hop around our garden later in the year, when they tumble down from the chimney pots, I'd have a flock of them following me.

An old friend kept one and taught it to repeat several words. My sister-in-law had a pet crow that would follow her to school every day.

But I just let them get on with things whatever it is. Some stupid blackbirds have made their nest on the pitched roof of the home made bird table fixed to the top of our clothes line post. Lots of squarking yesterday as the nest + babies contents started sliding down the roof!

I think Ziggy was in a situation where he couldn't have done right for doing wrong, and as always you end up feeling guilty whatever you do:mad:

I remember once being given a Little Owl while at work which had hit some overhead wires and injured it's wing. It was a beautiful bird, quite calm with human presence, and so I kept it in the office and got the chef to supply meat for food which it ate readily. After a week it still wouldn't fly and every one was visiting my office to see the bird, and I knew I couldn't keep it. I took some well meant advice to bring in the RSPCA so that they could offer advice and/or find the bird a home. When the guy came he inspected the bird, told me what a good job had been done to feed and look after the bird, and how healthy it was. He then said he would take the Owl and give it care.

Some months later, I was given another bird, a Dove with the same problem, so I called up the RSPCA and they said they would come and collect the bird. A day later the same guy turns up to collect the Dove and, just as I was handing the bird over, I asked him how the Little Owl was. He looked me in the face and told me that it had been put down "because it was RSPCA policy to put down birds of prey that couldn't fly because they hadn't got quality of life". If I had known that when handing the Owl to him he would nothave got the bird. It was a perfectly healthy bird, eating well, and quite happy and content as it was, and could have been given to a Wildlife Nature Center by the RSPCA. I was furious and he didn't get the Dove. I was so furious I had him escorted off the site [an old Hall and estate], by Security. I have never again given any bird or animal to the RSPCA nor will I ever support them.

      Ziggy,
It may well have rested there overnight and found it's strength and wings early this morning. Let's hope for the best. :)

Aww, thanks for all your kind words of support, i've been feeling pants all day about the whole thing. If I had just nestled him up & kept him in the bedroom with me...

Had to stop myself writing a tirade of "well thanks for such useless advice" reply on the bird forum.

Daughter #2 spent an hour in the car not talking to me because she wanted to bring it in. I feel as guilty as hell as i'd abandoned a baby that needed help & when I talked to my mate about it this morning he started going on about how to gut them & how many it takes to make a meal.:runhills:

Apparently, the present Mrs Zig was in tears about the poor thing last night (it was her car it was on) although if it upset her that much, I don't know why she didn't bring it in:what:

Like Ruth said, should have gone with my gut feeling & taken a baseball bat to any wooly thinking liberal do gooders.

Armandii & Sheal, thank you for your kind words. Thank you also goes out to GCQ, Scrunge & Kandy.

I am now drinking a bottle of wine, but I promise to stop again tommorow.

I handed a baby badger to the RSPCA once, they called him Glade and he appeared on Blue Peter. I always wanted a Blue Peter Badger.

The bird will soon fade from memory Ziggy..............until the next one finds you. Then you'll go through the heartbreak again, but at least you'll know what to do! :)
