Bin Laden's dead! I'm surprised nobody has posted this yet today.
The American's have finally got him!

The thing is what does this mean to us all now. Retaliation almost certainly, and probably somebody else to take his place.

There is already someone doing most of the work but the name was always an attraction to recruits.

It is likely that there will be a higher risk for a year or so but I think the organisation will gradually fade - as most terrorist ones do. Unfortunately, others seem to come along in their place.

I think "buried at sea" was appropriate for a person like him. The world is not a safer place just because he's dead, unfortunately, because there's always plenty of twisted, manically driven people out there ready to kill for whatever cause they "believe" in.

I would doubt if he was "buried according to Islamic requirements" and no doubt someone slipped some pork on his body as a indication of their contempt for him before he disappeared forever. I shed no tears for him, and our colonial relations will have a good day or two before reality catches up.

It`s strange how the Pakistan government is always "supporting " the international effort to rid the area of the Taliban. Yet, Bin Laden, and one of his sons, was killed inside Pakistans borders just a couple of hundred yards from a Pakistani army camp.

The thing that bugs me is that there are probably more than a hundred willing to take his place.
Terrorists cannot be beaten in the normal sense.

Well done to the US forces for killing him, good riddance.

Just thought Obama's speech was a bit OTT on how HE was the one that had directed the forces, but then he is a politician.

Pity he couldn't sort out a someting as simple as a oil well problem in the Gulf without just blaming us for it.

I agree with others that it will make little difference, but little difference is not the same as no difference. If anything, it makes a statement. It says, loud and clear, "if you wage war on us, we will hunt you down and kill you, no matter how long it takes, and no matter where you hide, and no matter what you do to try to stop us".

It would seem the American nation has had a day of celebration today. Tomorrow they will stop and think about the consequences of this man's death. Although the civilised nations of this world will be glad to see the back of him, we now have to wait for the come-back.......and there will be one!

The thing is, Pete, the operation couldn't go forward without the President's permission. He has to take the advice of the Military, the Intelligence Agencies, the Political Advisors, his Aides, weigh up the evidence, the success/failure ratio, the risk to the lives of the men doing the actual operation.

They could have gone for a stand-off strike using Drones, but he gave the go ahead for the assault using helicopters. The easy decision would have been to use the Drones but he didn't. If they had failed, and any of their own troops had been killed, you can bet every one involved would have run off and left him to take the flak and responsibility for the failure. He knew that when he gave the nod for the go ahead. He also knew that he was risking mens lives, but that comes with the President's job and it's an awfully lonely job when you're taking decisions like that.
In his speech, I didn't hear him say that he had killed Ben Ladin, he had to pitch that speech, after sweating it out while the operation was going on not knowing if it would succeed or fail, or whether any of the US troops would be killed, to a Nation of millions of people with different time zones. How do you tell your Country what's happened, Pete, how would you have done it??? If that had been Bush you can bet your life it would have been OTT and that he would have claimed sole responsibility. Whether you like Obama, or not, he had to take a decision that could have got men killed and that takes guts, because he knew if it had failed he'd have been hung out to dry.

Sad but true. But lets not forget who started the war. Bin Laden's cronies initiated the war when they killed and injured lots of innocent people.

Some will hail Bin Laden as a martyr, but at the end of the day he was hiding like the coward he was. The extremists' top man was a spineless weasel who hid, while asking others to do his bidding.

To let him live would be to tell those that followed him that western nations can be walked all over. Hunting him down and killing him send a very different message like I said earlier.

                Clueless,
I know that this man had to be 'taken out' and perhaps for the time being it's made his followers stop and think that the west is not so easy to put down. But these people are driven, be it by religion or anything else. They don't see it as terrorism I'm sure and will continue there fight against us, whatever it takes.

Still get a tear, when I think about the letters from the little kids who lost Daddy/Mummy in that tragedy. Still have my WTC blue stub as a reminder of all the innocent souls who died that day.

Hopefully the civil uprising in the Middle-East will see an end to these fanatical terror groups, as a new generation of people fight for their right to be an individual - especially for women, in a patriarchal society!
