We had a fairly established (about 6ft) Magnolia tree in our garden that we have had to move to make way for a greenhouse. Three days ago we planted it into a south-west facing border with plenty of compost and have watered it well every day since. The leaves have wilted and it's not looking happy. Do you think it will survive? How can we improve our chances? Are the leaves wilting through the stress of moving? Or is it a sign it is dead? How long should we leave it before deciding to take it out if it dies? Many thanks.

Very late ot be moving plants I'm afraid.

Water regularly. Possibly cut back to reduce the amount of leaf the roots are trying to maintain. Possibly erect a beach-windbreak type construction to keep the [i.e. "drying"] wind off it.

If it has wilted that badly (notwithstanding that the weather is warm!) it suggests you may not have taken enough root with it.

    Hi Kristen
I tottaly agree with what you have said , they hate to be moved at the best of times , deffo not enough root ball , it can be done now but you have to dig a trench around then cut away undermeath then slip a plastic sheet under or sacking to keep the root ball all together, I would just keep up the watering and as Kristen has mentioned a wind sun shield will help
You say established how long had it been growing ?

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I think there is a very good chance we didn't take enough root ball. It was in a very awkward position, butted right up to a fence so it was difficult to dig out. I'm not sure how long it has been in. We moved in July 2010. At first we weren't sure what it was and then this spring it produced two flowers which gave it away. It's quite a sparse looking tree, it is tall but hasn't filled out much. I'll try your recommended tips. Thanks again.
