Tree fern help is it dead?

I'm just thinking out loud here, but if what spruce is doing is a viable proposition, why cant you just put a steel post in the ground, put an outer skin of wire netting with compost or peat/dead leaves in-between.
Then plant a sawn off tree fern on top.

It amounts to the same thing, a tree fern planted on a stump.

I tottaly agree its like a huge moss pole that people grow house plants up .

It's something I have considered, the only draw back being the enormous fronds you'd expect from a 6 footer

Hi Update for everyone

All 4 tree ferns have survied the winter still leaving the wrapping on but have the tops open and I can see healthy buds on all of them I will take of all the protection in the next week or two once the frost have gone , and I will check if they have all rooted into the old tree fern logs I will take some pictures but I have a feeling they have

one is 5 feet , two 4 feet the other one is about two feet this is the original one I had and bought it at about 1 foot I had had it at least 10 years so I was gutted when that one died down, the others I had from B&Q at the end of the summer all half price !!
And they all performed realy well for two years before we had the minus 10 ggggrrr and my fault lulled into a false sense of security with all the mild winters we had , so last winter bought heavy duty fleece then wraped round, then wraped in in a normal one you buy to shade or just light frost then bubbled wrapped, this came up about 12 inches over the top then bracken old leaves packed into the top, dont look that nice in the garden but who cares this winter I will double the depth of the bark on the soil as I have learnt from keeing the daylilys that this realy helps but also a nice home for slugs !!!

View attachment 5152 Here the result you can actualy see the roots growing down into the old log I put swell gell in when I originaly put them together 3 out of the 4 have rooted in realy well the 4th is still sitting on the top not doing much but has the sighns of roots starting to grow in

Not bad !!! I am amazed how much roots to be honest , as you can see I used short pieces of bamboo as a sort of nail .
