Hi all. I've been growing some potatoes in large containers and they have grown like crazy. I have run out of "hilling up" space. Is it ok to just let them get on with it now? They are Wilja and look extremely strong and healthy.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to poison myself or my friends.

You are done! Water freely, make sure compost does not dry out, but also that the container can drain (e.g. "Bags" which only have draining holes in the base, but which sit on concrete / slabs will not drain from the base, they need some draining holes around the side just above the base - depends on the type of container you are using though)

In my experience Potatoes in contains need FAR more water than anything else I have every grown! When I tip mine out, even with what I think was "copious watering", the compost is often very dry at the bottom of the container.

If you get any spuds right at the top they will go green, but again in my experience I've never managed to get spuds to form high up the earthed-up part of the container. May depends on the variety though.

You might want to give them a liquid Potato feed (I use a slow release granular potato feed mixed in with the compost when I plant them)

Thank you. Is it true that green potatoes are poisonous?
We are hoping (praying) for rain now.
