Cucumber Plant

Morning folks , The cucumber plant is growing like mad now since i took the advice from Kristen and removed the lower flowers from it :thumb:, There is flowers and little cucmbers in the middle now and others forming further up the stem :happydance: I've had to take it of the chair and lower it so it gets more light' It's going to outgrow the window before long ' So i will need to move it soon to the greenhouse in a week or so,

It might be a precarious operation (and maybe your greenhouse is nowhere near the house), but it would be happier in the greenhouse during the day where it will get more light - but you'd need to bring it in at night if the forecast is below about 8C (it needs 10C minimum, but the greenhouse should keep a couple of degrees above the lowest night temperature)

Glad its growing well - hope it doesn't get too big!

I'll give that a try. Usually I have got 3 - 4 decent Cucumbers and then most of the rest seem to stunt or die off.:thumb:

 

Once they get into the greenhouse try to keep the humidity up. A gravel tray nearby with an inch or two of water in it, that can evaporate, will help. And misting the plants. Higher humidity also helps reduce infection by Red Spider.

It'll be interesting to see how they crop for us all. Especially us newbies to cucumbers.

 

mines a femspot ...so do we need to pinch them out like toms ?? ive just left mine in the corner of the greenhouse with fingers crossed

 

I let mine get on with it and don't remove side-shoots or anything else. They do make some side shoots, but 95% of their energy goes into the leader.

 

i shall leave it be then kristen,thanks ive planted some small ones outside but theyve wilted,it my first yr so i suppose il fail at a lot of things,great to have advice here much appreciated :thumb: x

 

I agree should be very interesting to see what us novice cucumber growers end up with and even a bit more for me as iam growing tomatoes & peppers for the first time too ,

ive got peppers and toms on the go aswell germinator my beefeater tom leaves are curling up thou?? trying to find a thread to match my prob as i text x

 

Don't worry joolz68 one of the cucumber growers on here will know the answer to your problem, Kristen seems to know a bit about cucumbers, I would like to know when you should start feeding a cucumber plant

Too cold I expect. Cucumbers / Cougettes / Squash hate the cold. To keep growing they need 10C minimum at night, and I doubt you have that outside until June.

is this the young leaves? If they are a nice dark green colour, and they are just rolling up (inwards) then they are fine.

I start feeding mine once the first fruits have started to swell. I give them the same fertilizer as the Tomatoes.

 

Thanks for that Kristen , The 5 litres of organic tomato feed i have will come in handy then, I think it's ok to use on peppers aswell at half the rate you give tomatoes,

My Peppers get what the Tomatoes and Cucumbers get ... but if there are some instructions on the feed that you have you'd do better to follow them than listen to me!

Having said that, I do think that instructions often suggest feeding them far too much - which makes money for the manufacturer of course.

If in doubt try half-and-half this year, and see what does better, and then next year they'll all get the best treatment.

You have got a notebook, right?, to record all these experiments, dates, results?
