    Hi everyone,
Can anyone out there help me. I want to buy a mulching mower as the grass cuttings pile is taking over - but I don't want to lose my striped lawn. As far as I can see all the mulching mowers are 4-wheeled. Can anyone help?

    Jack :help:

I just mow my lawn (cylinder mower, with roller) without the box - i.e. leaving the clippings on the lawn. Have to do that anyway when I use the selective weedkiller as the first few clippings can't be composted.

Only other thought, if you are thinking of a Tractor-style ride on with rotary mower underneath is to tow a roller. I have on which is quite wide, and "hollow", which can be filled with water to get the appropriate weight

I am confused does not a mower cut grass and you use the cuttings collected as a mulch under plants? I mulch with fresh cuttings all the time from the grass bag.

Mulching mowers chop the grass into much finer bits than ordinary mowers and in theory the finely chopped grass that is left on the lawn breaks down quickly and adds nitrogen to the soil. The cuttings also help reduce water loss due to evaporation.
As far as I understand (and I may well be wrong) using green material such as grass cuttings as a mulch works as a weed suppressant but the decay of green material when mixed with soil takes up nitrogen from the soil and reduces the food available for the adjacent plants.

I've not been able to find any reports of controlled experiments regarding the claims for the benefits of mulching mowers.
