Shiney very kindly gave me some seed of a splendid BNS variety some years ago, and I have sown the last batch of seed this year ... but its sadly got "old" and only one has come up.

So I need some more seed so I have a cupboard full of fruit stored for the winter months :thumb:

Suggestions for varieties please? I'm after nice large fruits that keep well.

I grew some Cobnut F1 last year. They were OK, but the fruits were small - matured very early though, which may be why they were small; I can managed a longer-season variety down South here!

Hmmm ... I wonder if they were the variety Waltham Butternut - looks similar, and is open pollinated.

    Thanks :)

Sorry, missed this one Kristen. Have sown Walthams Nutterbut but, like yours, I think the seed is not viable:cry3: Turks turbans have failed as well.

The Kabocha & Corgettes planted at the same time have come up.

Kings seeds do the Waltham seeds at £1.50, might get some more. Sis grew them last year & had a great crop.

Thanks Ziggy. Were the Walthams fruits a decent size? I'm quite keen to have something fairly large as I think they store better.

They were on the West Bay plot, despite that bit of the bed needing more nutrient.

On the home plot, I wish I hadn't bothered, but that was just a building site last year. Still clearing the rubble out.

Ah, OK. Those WERE the fruits ... thanks. Well, apart from the one on the right they look a fair bit smaller than I was hoping for. Here's my harvest from 6 plants of my seed from Shiney

Nice crop Kristen :dbgrtmb: Like I said, needed more nutrient digging in, getting there slowly.

Kristen, Mrs shiney says she is keeping one plant ready for you (from the seeds you sent back to us earlier this year, as a few germinated) when you come down at the end of the month :dbgrtmb:

    Do you want it?

Yes please! You did better than me then, I only got 1-out-of-8 germinated ... seed must be three years old though.

Kristen, Did you get my PM I sent the other day?

Mrs shiney has also grown some Argentinian BNS (not F1) that have germinated OK if you want any.

As she has been having a little trouble with some seed germination (particularly chillies) she has started experimenting with her bean sprouter. That is a contraption that she uses for sprouting fast growing edible sprouts like mung beans (bean sprouts) and alfalfa etc. Three days ago she put in chilli, BNS and coriander and the first two already look as though there is 100% germination :dbgrtmb:

    Hi Kristen,
I also have a few plants of which I can bring down a couple for you on the open day at Shiney's. I don't know what flavour they are as lost the packet  I'm a very very novice but have more plants than I can cope with so you would be welcome

That's very kind, thanks! I'll put something in the kitty for them for Shiney's charity :thumb:

These were saved seeds from a bought squash. Looked like a Waltham. I have run out of space so planted them out, as seen. on a wall. Silly me.
