Both me and a friend planted sunflower seeds in my back garden 27 days ago as a friendly growing contest. While I planted mine at the correct depth according to the pack (1.5 cm) my friend opted to use his poor knowledge of the metric system and planted his at least 3cm deep. 24 days passed and wouldn't you know it, his has grown and mine hasn't. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks since planting and the pack says it takes 14-21 days for germination so I have to think that my seed has failed.

Is there any way I can test though before I plant another? I've considered having a gentle dig in there but I was worried I'd damage it. Any ideas? Play the waiting game?

I'd wait a few days. The reason, apart from duff seeds for the difference in germination might be that due to the dry weather we've had, his being deeper have also been in moister soil.
I've recently found a few self seed sunflowers popping up and they've been pretty close to the surface, but the wet weather over the past 10 days seems to have set them growing.

Yes, if a mouse, etc. will eat them they're viable to grow.
