Hi - seen the article in this weeks garden news about the Lutea rose but can't find it in any garden centres - any suggestions?
I'm looking for strong climbing roses to cover a pig netting fence ready for a a family wedding next June (2012) also to cover the arch for the couple to walk under at the reception! Help ideas would be appreciated
    Thanks

Hi Jackspratt I am surprised that you cannot find it anywhere it is a very beautiful Rose and can be purchased in lots of places, try Googling this .Rosa banksia 'Lutea'?
But expecting any Rambling Rose to cover an arch in a year is very optimistic, but hey what's wrong with optimism:dbgrtmb::WINK1:

Just remember that it is BIG eventually and slightly tender which is why it is normally grown on a high wall as at Powys Castle Gardens etc.

suggestions for quick growing plants for the arches

Hi All - I agree the rose is beautiful - perhaps I'm looking for it too late in the season? If I'm too optimistic are there other plants that would do the job and be in flower for 30th June 2012?

The Garden News has a lot to answer for! :loll:

I was reading the readers question ' Patio rose with scent ' to aged parent, so she decided she wanted the rose 'Sweet Dream ' that was mentioned.

Have just bought 4 roses in pots from them, first time I've used them, and have to say their service was brilliant. Despatched Thursday, arrived Friday. I made the order up to 4 to reduce the impact of P&P, and took advantage of some of their special offers including a purple one!

          Cheers.

If you want a yellow rose (cannot understand why anyone wants to plant these awful things, but then) Climbing Golden Showers is as good (bad) as any.
David Austin Roses Limited is as good a place to look for inspiration.

Hi Palustris I have Golden showers, not at all impressed with it, which is a climber, where as banksia lutea is a Rambler,,but I would rather look at a bunch of Roses than a bunch of Banana,s:heehee: (no offence BM):WINK1:

Thanks for finding the thread Grumpy - I have managed to find a white banksia rose - but it looks like its not as hardy as the yellow and things have to be tough to survive here as we are rather an exposed farm- dammed winds!! Will try and get a yellow onw or take some cuttings as they look beautiful and hopefully won't need spraying! I will look at the David Austin but they seem a bit pricey!

Good morning Jacksprat I know it seems expensive but it is for life, you will only be able to purchase it as a container Rose at this time of the year that,s why Roses are a bit more expensive now ,than a bare root Rose which you can get between(October to April),try this link it might help.:)

Down the road from me there's a pair of semis where many years ago the neighbours must have decided to plant twin roses. So there are matching R banksia luteas up each side of the front, up to the eaves now. They look fantastic in late May - they're flowering right now and have been out for a week at least. I know things are early this year but I don't think it would do the job for you on June 21st.

I think your best bet would be to visit David Austen's near Wolverhampton on or around that date, pick something that is in flower, making allowances if you're much further North or South, and hope for the best.

When I visited, some years ago, they had about 15 ramblers growing on a huge frame near the car park you could pick from - huge strong growers, so they might put on enough growth this season to perform as you want.

You could always phone them and ask for advice before mail ordering if a visit is impossible. I bet they'd be helpful.
