Just come back from a week in East Anglia. Masses of white, red and pink valerians were growing together on the beach at Aldeburgh. I love them, but they seem to thrive best on dry, sandy soil. Shame about my clay, but I'm still intending to have a go.
Also seen in East Anglia: lupins growing wild. Shades of New Zealand, where the acres of 'escaped' lupins are a fantastic sight.

I love it. I flowers for up to 20 weeks in total, which makes it a really useful plant. Once it has stopped flowering about the end of June, cut it back to half height and within about 3 or 4 weeks it will be back in flower again. Better still - just dead head it, but there is usually so much of it that its easier to chop back.

I would agree about the flowering times. The seeds may say that they flower in July, but we had some near my flat, many years ago... I had to go out with secateurs a few days before my wedding, so that I could get past it in my dress without getting pink smears on the skirt, and so that would be in full flower at the beginning of June! :)

Seen it growing 'wild' round here too; even in crevices in brick walls!! proving it prefers dry conditions I guess.....
