Advice on Tomatoes/disasters

    Hi All
    I am new to gardening, recently retired and bought a greenhouse,
    I have no experience, so wish to learn from you all

    No experience, well I Grew four tomato plants last year, in a 4x2 polythene greenhouse
    I do not know what happened, but this is what I got and I need to avoid it in my new 6x10 greenhouse

    The Tomatoes were BEEF Tomatoes, they grew, and turned red, but I dare not eat them as they were all flesh NO seeds, some were split
    One plant same variety, only instead of no seeds the seed /wet part innerds were all black, the skins and flesh were red and not split

    What may I have done wrong, and most importantly how do I avoid it this year

    (I have 2 Moneymaker 2 Gardeners delight and 2 Alicante, They are about 18" high, and each have three flowering trusses)
    They are in 15" pots, filled with tomato growbag compost,in an unheated greenhouse

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Hi Jack!
    I'm just across the Tay from you and can comment from my own 'local' experience.
    I've tried 'beef' toms a couple of times and they really don't seem to mature properly up here and I've given up trying to grow them.
    The three varieties you are growing this year should do well. In fact with t three trusses already formed you're two ahead of me!
    Gardeners Delight does well outside up here. I've got six currently under a bit of protection (two old windows) growing in the bed beside the GH. In the past I've grown GD in our GH and in our polytunnel and although they grow very well under cover, the outdoor crop is larger and tastier.

      Good to know that.
      I do not think I would risk outside in Fife (they might get nicked :loll:)

      If I can get anything in the GH this year I will be more than happy, and SWMBO will not complain I have thrown good money away

      I only tried Beef toms as that is all the garden centre had, and having no knowledge at all just took them
      I picked the three this year from research on the internet that they are good standard result variaties

      At the moment my plants are in the blow away plastic 4x2 and I am busy building the 6x10
      (4x2 already blown away twice this week, last Monday and today and I had to bring the toms into the kitchen)
      They were out of the pots and on the ground, but seem to have survived setting another truss during the week)

      Just now I am emptying a shed, stowing the contents under a taurp, moving shed, and setting a base for the new 6x10
      It is pretty hard graft non stop,when just retired but I aint dead yet :yess:

      Hi Jack,

      I've grown tomatoes in greenhouse for years and always struggle with the beefsteak types, they don't always ripen then sometimes split or rot away on the plant.

      You are better off with the smaller ones, I'm sure your Gardener's Delight will do well.

        Gardening isn't easy. No pain, no gain. But it's a bit easier when retired and you don't have a paid job AND garden to support. And you've got those lovely tasty toms to look forward to.
