I am about to install a laterally laid rainwater harvesting system in a new house I`m building. This means that instead of burying a large tank I am burying what looks like milk crates linked together. What is the minimum soil depth of cover members would recommend for a grass or plant topped surface. The crates will be covered by a water permiable textile. JD

Interesting. Have you got a link to the "tank" please?

Dunno about soil depth. 9" to a foot minimum, maybe?

I would say at least the depth of a spade... a foot would probably be ok. If I were you I would also cover the linking pipe with an underground warning tape to help avoid future mishaps ~ there's a standard yellow one with the legend 'buried pipeline below' readily available.
