I have just (early spring) planted a hornbeam hedge using bare rooted plants, I have just noticed that the bark has been stripped off the bottom of some plants. I don't think it's caused by rabbits, (no droppings). It's located close to conifer trees in my neighbours. Could it be squirrels? I live in Dublin, Ireland. Any ideas?

    Hello and welcome Mob.
I've never known squirrels to strip bark but deer do. Could that be the problem ?

It still could be Rabbits, Mob, as no droppings isn't complete evidence that's it's not.:dunno: Unless of course Hornbeam bark makes them constipated.:D:heehee:

    Hi mob

Squirrels to indeed strip bark off trees, but only usually at the tips of the higher branches and stems. I'd be more inclined to say that it's rabbit damage and can easily be addressed by putting up rabbit-proof netting around the trees, or individual spiral tree guards.
