What is this stuff?

It could well be Rue. A good way to treat it would be to rake over any of the plants to make them stand proud of the grass prior to mowing then chop away. Repeat this a few times and the plant should run out of it's stored energy and die.

If that doesn't work apply either Vitax or Verdone.

sorry, can't help with identifying your weed merseygull but would appreciate anyone's help in identifying our lawn problem: small deep blue/purple coloured flower (not clover) gradually taking over our front and back lawns. seen some on neighbours lawn too so it's 'catching'! not totally unnattractive but, like you, we want green grass. would appreciate advice.

Randkell, it sounds like it could be Prunella Vulgaris or Selfheal. A pretty weed, brightens up a boring green lawn! Is it anything like this?

thanks Boghopper - that's it exactly! trouble with it is it's almost taking over the whole lawn. However, with your information to hand my husband has just found it in our Wildflower book and it actually sounds a rather wonderful healing plant - how interesting. Probably just leave it be I think.

Just to let you know that having "weeded and seeded", bits of the lawn did die off, but I've re-seeded, overseeded and all of that stuff seems to have gone...just a few small unwanteds that I'm dealing with by one of those weed pullers...looking good...!
