Or we all move to Iceland, where there is the best ever drinking water...but then of course it is boring there and there are the volcanoes...

A better solution would be to dig up the M25 and make it into a moat. Then the people of London could fill it with water from the Thames, and become self sufficient. Then they could all live happily ever after without the need to eye up the resources of other more frugal areas.

How did you manage to get the words 'boring' and 'volcanoes' into the same sentence:)

We have a few smaller underground reservoirs here as well as surface ones. A good idea perhaps, stops evaporation.

It's not a original idea by far and it's certainly not an idea cooked up by Boris.

I can remember this idea being talked about over 15 years ago and the row it caused between the proponents and the consevationist/anglers. It sounds like a good idea but the effects on rivers and canals [they were including them as well] could be devastating. There are already extraction plants on rivers taking water from them to fill reservoirs and causing drops in levels that affects the natural environment.:cry3::what:

Trying to use rivers and canals as conveyor belts for water extract is an idea that has been examined and rejected for many environmental, regional, and financial reasons. So apart from more publicity for Boris and keeping his image as a forward thinking innovator in the gaze of a gullible public I doubt whether it will come to fruition.:stirpot::D

      Hey Boris
have a word with the Decision Makers and get them to use the excessive Sea-Water being produced as a result of Global Warming, shove it through a De-Salination Plant and provide clean drinking water to the masses.

I can see the Headline:- "Boris Saves the World".:yahoo:

      Defo banker for Nobel Prize.

      Go Boris

Remember Yorkshire Water "Borrowed" from Keilder and pumped millions of gallons via rivers to raise the water levels of Reservoirs around Leeds.
Be warned - it can happen!!:what:

When I lived in Gibraltar for three years (the border was closed at the time)
All the water is from the casements, the other side of the rock is concreted and the little rain water runs down into underground storage, as there is no rain April to Oct RATIONING begins around July
Dual system in Gib, Toilets are plumbed with sea water
We used to get water from Keilder delivered by brand new oil tankers built in Sunderland, fitted on the Tyne and first trip was fresh water to Gibraltar from Keilder
Locals got none but service personel got a bowser at their home
I shared mine with old locals or those with babies, and got into trouble a few times for it
How can you take a bath in a few gallons of fresh potable water, and see families boiling tainted water to drink
I know I was in the wrong and the reasons Why, but I took that chance

I am but a simple soul and I know I've probably got the wrong end of the stick (possibly even, the wrong stick), but every year there is some part of the country which suffers from water shortages. But we are an island, we're surrounded by water, billions of gallons of the ruddy stuff.

Last year Thames Water spent £250m on a desalination plant, a lot of money? Yes, but Cameron has just pledged an extra £814m of British taxpayers money in overseas aid - how long before these countries start supplying us with 'vital resources'?:what::scratch:
