Ice Age

What does everybody think of the Ice Age. Will it happen again and will we all freeze...?

Right then,

We are still in an ice age. This period is known as an interglacial period.

A time when the ice has retreated enough to allow temperate forrests to develop and life to take hold in the previously ice gripped northern latitudes.

There have been longer and warmer interglacial periods in this ice age.

A previous one was warm enough to allow Hippopotamuses to live in the Thames basin.

Indeed the River Thames was pushed into its present course by the ice sheet during the last glaciation, it used to flow where Norwich is now and because the North Sea didn't exist then, it was merely a tributary of The Rhine.

The studies into "global warming" only surveyed a small percentage of existing glaciers and concluded they were melting.

They missed the 80% that were advancing:DOH:

In my, and a large group of concerned scientists, opinion, the only thing stopping the glaciers from rolling all over Northern Europe again is Mankinds activity with regard to fossil fuel.

I'm not saying that we should keep on using it, just that until we've worked out exactly whats going on with the ice age then we ought not to just ignore all our options.

NB, during one ice age many millions of years ago, the North and South polar ice caps met in the middle.

Now what would that do to your tender perenials

It is just that I was talking about it yesterday and then I looked at the pattern of the weather which changed like twenty times during the day, one moment sun, one moment cloudy and windy, one moment rain, so I just couldn't help thinking that this is so much like the weather behaves in Iceland.

I know that climate is evolving all the time so a certain change of season is to be expected, but it seems quite sudden...

 

What do I think of the ice age? I confess to not thinking about it very much.
Will it happen again? Undoubtedly.
Will we all freeze? Well, I aim to live long enough to become a real pain to my children, but even I doubt I'll be around long enough to walk across the ice to France!

Sunspot activity...or rather the lack of it or what scientists are calling a hibernation period for the sun is causing concern.Many scientists are at a loss to explain the odd behaviour of the climate worldwide.
With the ridiculous human overpopulation of the planet...a mini ice age would mean the death of tens of millions through starvation and of course wars.I'm glad to say I won't be here to worry about it.

The right hand picture was the Namibian desert just over a week ago...unheard of snowstorms...the worlds going nuts.

 

I was watching a TV programme once where some American bloke who was known for being able to make things happen had came to England (Cornwall more specifically) one summer to build a kids play park. He had his team of local volunteers, and some of the jobs that were to be done (according to his plan) required prolonged dry spells. He didn't get them, so had to rely on good old British ingenuity to find a solution.

Getting a bit frustrated by the frequent and unpredictable weather changes, he remarked something like: 'I don't understand this freak weather, its like its sunny, then within an hour its raining hard, then the sun comes back out, and then it gets windy and then calm, all in one day.'

A local, smiling, calmly replied 'welcome to Cornwall'. I laughed at this, and both at the same moment my wife and I remarked to each other 'welcome to the whole of Britain more like'.
