I need a really good remedy to get rid of them, they have taken over one side of my greenhouse, they are everywhere. Tried googling this but there doesn't seem to be any definite way!!! :gaagh:

I get invaded ocasionally by tiny, normal and giant ants on the march. I use washing up liquid in water in a spray bottle. Some people prefer vinegar. Others say Borax or chalk ...

This is my remedy for ants..

    1 spray bottle..
    1/2 litre of warm water
1 bottle of Lavender essential oil..
Mix together & shake periodically while you spray..
I have had that problem in my greenhouse & they were gone within a week..

    I'm with Dai on this.
Nippon is great - but please keep it to yourself. The supplies keep drying up.
Try and keep pets and kids away for a couple of days.

I use the white powdery stuff but you have to do it again if they come back. I did try some other stuff which was like a clear liquid or gel but I wasn't that impressed.

If they invade a plant pot I put it in a tray of water to stop them going up through the holes in the bottom. But it's a recurrent problem and I have to deal with them annually. Just found some yellow ones in my lawn! Look for their runs.. they all run along the same path and treat those too.

    Good luck.

    Kate :)

I know you think I am joking, but I got rid of a huge nest with Bicarbonate of soda shaken on thickly the pour a kettle of boiling water over.. I did this twice & they have not come back.. Also the lavender water spray is a very good deterrent if nothing else..
An old metthod was to get syrup or treacle tins & lay them near by to draw the ants out into then put the lid on & dispose, but jars or something with a little syrup in might do just the same... :D..

Marley, a question. If you're pouring boiling water over them, why are you bothering to use Bicarb., as well?

My Gran would always just use boiling water (depending on where the little blighters were) but me, I prefer the water/washing-up liquid method - so very much cheaper than Nippon, no unsightly powder around and, a really cheapie liquid usually has a pretty pungent smell (which is why I'd never use it to actually wash up with!).

Just reading the two posts above re Jeyes fluid and washing up liquid remedies to get rid of Ants. Val can I ask what strength of Jeyes fluid did you use? Fidgetsmum could you tell more about your washing up liquid remedy? Did you use hot water and lots of liquid? My son's garden in North London is swarming with ants and if you walk down his road you can see them in all the gardens. It seems he may need some really strong remedy.

I like ants and tend to leave them be if they are in the garden. I get them every year and they don't bother me so I don't bother them.
