I'm going away for 3 days and I'm a bit worried about the plants in my greenhouse as the weather's forecast to be really hot. I don't particularly want to leave the door open (it's a cheapy plastic greenhouse and I don't want the cover ripped by the wind, or the whole thing to collapse), should I just move the plants out of it?

It's got strawberries in it which might be ok actually but there are also 2 seed trays that I think are best moved out, what do you think?

No helpful neighbour to look after them? If not then I'd move them out to a more sheltered place.

    Best move them out.

Alternatively, set them up with capillary matting leading into a big bucket of water, and tie the door firmly open so it can't swing about. I keep my greenhouse door open permanently from June to Sept.

I would just put them outside on the shady side of the house.

I agree with Alice and JWK as it would be simpler to leave them in the cool shade and water just before you leave.

I'd take the green house with me.

Don't trust any other Badger to look after it.

You could also get some of those capillary watering mats to put underneath them for while you're gone.

    First choice, friendly neighbour
    2nd, put outside in shade
3rd, capillary matting - but this doesn't work so well with seed trays as some seed trays have the holes too far off the ground.

Depends on the neighbor........ We went on hol once and asked one of ours to look after things. When we got back our pond had about 8 inches of water left in it! It had somehow spilled out and began draining. He said he didn't know what to do...... He had our mobile and could have text or rang and hubby could have told him what to do. Moron. He also killed some of my plants by not watering them and yet they were near ones he DID water.......

Agree with you about the neighbour, sometimes getting people to look after the garden/greenhouse is not such a good idea. Don't ask me how I know this :cry3:

I agree with the previous posters about taking the seed trays out and tie open the door. Or maybe a gravel bed in a shallow tray filled with water, might work better than capillary matting?

wow I read so many people say theirs gets blown away/ripped with the 1st gust of wind! Is yours well sheltered then?

i couldn't leave it permanently open tho coz it's main function is not to keep plants warm but to hide them from the most fearsome pest in my garden - my toddler! :catapult: :inautumnleaves:

thanks everyone, didn't get the time to read your posts before I left (mad rush!) but I did take the trays out and came back to some lettuce sprouts! :dbgrtmb: luckily my wormery which had to be taken out of the shed for the same reasons (heat) didn't get flooded so all is well :yay:
