We had a mass spawning in our pond back in March, resulting in huge numbers of tadpoles (judging by the spawn these are mostly toads). Now, at the start of July, our tadpoles are still happily munching on the blanket weed and show no inclination to grow any legs! Is this unusual? Our neighbours over the road had some of our tadpoles for their smaller pond, and theirs are now walking about!

    Cheers

I was once told its because its a lack of iodine. I had a similar problem. So I added just a few drops of iodine. A few weeks later they had all grown legs and hopped it.

I do only mean 2 or 3 drops once.

2 or 3 drops to what size pond?

And what would cause a lack of iodine?

    Cheers

That's what I was told by a biologist neighbour. I have no idea why it works it just does. (I have moved so I can't ask my neighbour) but I have a pond that has frogs.

I read also that they require to be able to eat meat - which may be the same issue, iodine. For the moment I've been giving them any dried up meaty cat food that the cat leaves, to which they seem quite partial. I'll await the results.

    Thanks

You lucky thing! 5 years ago I put in a pond expressly to get frogs (or toads) and so far - zilch! Yet I've seen frogs in my garden.

However, the problem I had with slugs and snails was resolved when I got rid of the kniphofia! :heehee:
