Jack, books tell you the exact science of things, they don`t tell you the short cuts. That is where we at Gardeners Corner come in. All the gardening information you will ever need is here, on this site. Ask the correct question and you will get the correct answer. Eventually.:D

      Thank you all

I realise ALL my questions can be answered on here
I just do not want to become the PITA who asks simple questions constantly and puts nothing back in

I am unable to contribute back, as I do not have the knowledge
I am a firm beliver in pay for what you take ie if someone donates you an old garden fork for nothing at least give a box of chocolates for the wife or a tin of sweets for the kids

Thus I have both subscribed and donated to the Forum, as the only way I can reciprocate at the moment

Re the two tomes mentioned Readers Digest Encyclopedia of garden plants and flower and the RHS one
Would they answer my needs or are they like the thirty books I have just been given
An Encylopeida of garden flowers, hundres of colour pics of flowers their latin name how high they grow, But no actual information of HOW TO GROW

A beautiful picture of a magnificent rose, evening star, "rosustius entius nocotne"
RED, climbs and grows to 10' fragrent scent, likes south facing and rich soil

Is of no use to me

      I need
A RED ROSE, grows as a climbing rose 10' high, plant ten inches deep in very deep quality soil NOT Clay or stoney, ideally facing south but would be fine anywhere but North. Anytime between FEB AND JULY, DO NOT plant anything alongside it, less than 2' away
Feed it weekly etc with chicken manure until flowers appear then change to rose feed whilst in bloom
Needs at least two gallons of water per week if no rain etc etc
After blooming and before the winter sets in cut back to four inches above brown wood or nearest sideways facing shoot above that

      Told you I was a noobie :-)

      Ooh Dear Jack,

You will never be a pain.

From day one you have been one of our most beloved members and it will never be a problem to answer any of your questions.:dbgrtmb:

You put far more into this forum than you realise, we love your input of tales of huge undertakings:thumbsup: that is what its all about, community, friendship & having a good laugh while we are at it.

You can ask what ever you want and if you don't get a good response then they'll have me to deal with, not to mention what'll happen when Armandii gets back from his fishing trip in the Andees:yess:

Jack .... everybody was a 'noobie' once, even the most knowledgeable of members here and, if we had all the answers well, not only would there be no need of GC, but we'd miss out on all the banter and leg-pulling too! I can tell you, from personal experience, no matter how daft you think your question might be, no-one is ever going to say 'What? You don't even know that?' instead, they will take you gently by the hand and explain - twice or three times if needs be.

When you enjoy (or are passionate) about something and someone comes along wanting to share that experience, people are invariably keen to share whatever knowledge they may have in order that you too, can enjoy it.

        That's why GC was 'invented'.

          Hi Jack,

You ask specific questions which others are afraid to ask, or assume they know the answers. The replies you elicit will have helped many people whether they post heavily or browse casually without even registering.

Asking questions and reading are the cornerstones of learning anything!
You can do trial and error, but there is no need to re-invent the wheel every time. Posting here means you are benefiting from hundreds of years of gardening experience, and that's just from Dai.

Noah did tell me to bring 2 of everything, he said we'd never know where we'd end up so make sure i'd got seeds for every climate.

I am a total newbie and I would like to say the recommendations in this thread have been useful to me and Jack, I share your frustrations with the above mentioned type of gardening book. I would also like to say how friendly everybody seems, and that will be a comfort next time I have a silly question to ask! :D

Euphrasie, questions posted on here are NEVER classed as silly. However, the same doesn`t apply to the answers.:D Also, I see you come from London, beware of that Melinda, she comes from Lahndan. Of course we Welsh pronounce the name correctly. Lundun..:dbgrtmb:

I have family in Wales who would agree with you there, but I think I'll take my chances with Melinda and stick with my dulcet Lahndan accent :heehee:

                      Hi Euphrasie,

Does the 62 mean you were born in the same cold winter as me ?:)
