I think this proves that Buddleia will grow just about anywhere!

Quite a common sight round here, I've seen them growing amongst the sandstone bricks on a railway bridge, in brick walls, in fact anywhere where there's NO soil!!

There's some wasteground near us too that is now just a buddleia plantation :D, it's all concrete and yet it's now dense with self sown buddleias, some as tall as 15ft or more...

Yes, i've seen buddleia growing quite large out of the front of an old stone house.. and i got mine out of a crack in a cement carpark! Just like above they seem to grow anywhere.

.......and I've just planted Black Knight in my front garden. If I'd hung on long enough, one would have appeared from nowhere. :heehee:

I watched a program on T.V a few weeks back, all about the Buddleia saying how there a menice to control on railway lines and work takes weeks to remove them if possible and it was stated they are now know as a WEED!! :what:

They do grow everywhere but can't be considered a pest - they are easily removed with a decent maintenance schedule, which is why Network Rail has trouble with them. They are the most attractive weed and the feral plants can rival many cultivars. In fact Dartmoor, an AGM holder, was a feral plant from a quarry.

Buddleja loves thin, chalky soil - which is why it grows so well in disused quarries, as well as chinks in concrete wastelands. It doesn't always grow so well in good soil - definitely case of being mean to keep 'em keen.

went to quote a garden layout about a week ago (remove some shrubs/plants and replace with new)...

first thing I told the home owner when I saw his buddleia was:

          'That has to come out'

he never said anything, so it will be removed in spring ... I hate them ....

some people plant them because they are supposed to be fragrant .... I struggle to smell any fragrance from them, but my nose is old

That's very sad:( Buddleja are beautiful shrubs if they are pruned and looked after correctly just cut them back to about knee height in February/March and they reward you with lovely big plumes of sweetly scented purple sprays which last for ages and attract hundreds of butterflies :sunny:

It has to be the very best shrub for butterflies (hence it's common name), i happen to think the flowers are rich and luscious looking, plus, i love their sweet smell :wub2:

The small birds pinch the fresh new leaves in spring, they shred them - presumably for their nests !!!
