Would you still eat meat if you had to hunt the animals for it - or to kill the chickens etc...?

I don't know to be honest...

I have seen a picture of a tied dog waiting to be killed and cooked in some asian kitchen.. He does look frightened and sad.

And the same I am sure look cows and pigs after a few hours journey on a truck when they arrive to destination to the butcher house and the same look some prisoners of war waiting to be tortured...

But of course when you buy meat sliced at the store it is easy not to think of it...

I believe if you can't kill it yourself, you shouldn't eat it.

I live near a big slaughterhouse and am often in the car behind a trailer of cows on their way to be killed. The looks they give you are not the same as the looks on the cows in the field.

I used to live very near a slaughterhouse and if the cows were delivered too late for slaughter that night they would have to stay in the slaughterhouse overnight. Those cows used to cry all night long. The times I nearly got up to let them out into a field. I can still hear them now! Terrible noise to listen to.

Morrissey has been doing Meat Is Murder (a song by The Smiths) on his 2011 tour, with a video of a slaughterhouse on the bigscreens behind him, and this has made a lot of people recently stop eating meat, though, I am not one of them.. but whenever I watch that BBC3 show about different animals and what they're used for, I wish I didn't eat it.

I stopped eating land animals in 1984 after seeing a representative from the meat trade on telly.

He clearly only saw animals as a commodity & didn't give a fig about their welfare.

I thought, well, this is one customer you are never going to get any money from ever again.

I hate the meat industry and would quite happily give up eating meat. Giving up dairy would be harder, I think, and if you continue with it you've still got all the complications surrounding milk production.

I love vegetarian food; the problem is, my family doesn't. I got sick of spending hours making something only for my son to spend hours picking out more or less every single ingredient except the tomatoes. Courgettes were a particular problem. From his face, you'd have thought he was being made to consume paint stripper.

So I've given up for a while, but I will be returning to my nice meat-free diet when I don't have to worry so much about other people. I don't think I'll ever persuade the cat to go veggie, though ...

I have relatives & friends who live in the USA who regularly hunt for the table either with a gun or a bow as part of everyday life, it is part of the culture & taught in school in allot of states....
They also take part every year in a charity program which I think is excellent.. It is called "Hunt for the Hungry.." Where you donate your animal to be processed for the poor, hungry & homeless families of America. This is done in conjunction with the Fish & Game Dept's annual cull of Deer, Elk etc. across America..

No I wouldn't, but somehow I feel it is kinder when an animal is hunted in the wild and killed instantly than when they are sent for slaughtering and have to queue up for the bolt gun!!!!

Like the instant bit Val, but there is no kindness when it come to killing, its killing.

The kinder thing to do would be to stop breeding massive amounts of animals to kill & put the land down to a better use, ie feeding an ever increasing world population rather than just keeping the few that can afford the end "meat" product with a full belly.

I was having a look at the website - ziggy - since I had never seen a "haggis" (I actually never heard of the word before) and now that I look at it it really reminds me of an animal that they have in Australia.

How do I know that? Because my environmentalist/fisherman/archaeolog nephew brought back from Australia this very funny toy which is a soft toy in the shape of the animal itself which would jump out as you would open the tin!!! So it kind of remained stuck in my mind. The name is quite an ancient sounding name.

Next question...why do they call it "the kingdom of Fife?" but the best person to answer this one is probably the man with "the longest surname of America"...
