I changed over to free range meat some time ago - then realised that "free range" wasn't really "free range" if they couldn't get to the door to get out!! I kept my own chickens (ex battery) for a couple of years for real "free range eggs" and transferred to organic meat. But I'm finding it really difficult to eat any meat now - though I eat fish and shell fish. I personally couldn't kill any animal apart from snails and wasps - but wouldn't want to eat them!!:loll: So no meat for me now.

My dilemma is that I have two children (one autistic and both sensory compromised) who are very limited eaters, and both love milk & cheese - so I have switched them to organic. But I can't force them to be vegan. They also won't try any new veggie meals I try! Luckily, my children aren't fussed about meat, but do like the occasional burger or sausage and chicken nugget, which are organic at home.

But my children don't understand that macDonalds etc. don't have the same ethos and don't make burgers/chicken nuggets from organic meat. And it is difficult when they go to parties etc. So I don't make them eat organic meat, or restrict them when they are out at parties.

      Tell me about it:DOH:

The boy won't eat any animal products at all, doesn't eat green beans or gravy. Loves baked beans..

The girl will eat pigs & moo moos but not fish, chicken, peanut butter or baked beans. Loves gravy.

The mrs will eat anything and everything and is consequently the size of Belgium:DOH:Not the skinny little girl who used to steal my lunch at school anymore, should have taken that as a warning sign:DOH:

Doesn't matter how you bring them up, they'll all end up in macdonalds eventually because their friends go there.

Brought all my kids up as vegetarian, so they could make their choices when they were old enough, which I respect without making snide comments.

Had an hour to kill with my Daughter in town last night, she took me for a cup of tea in burger King. I didn't know the set up, like where the milk & sugar was so she asked me when the last time i'd been in burger king was.

I looked blank till she said, "You've never been in a burger king before have you Dad?"

      She was right.

Like a previous poster i was bought up being able to hunt and also rear for the table and killing myself.
I am not impressed with mass produced anything to be honest not just food and to be honest would be happier eating my own reared animals,"if god didnt want us to eat animals he would have not made them out of food"
Plus it is very hard trying to eat steak and chips if it keeps running around!

That's a strange logic  Tribes who are still cannibalistic could apply the same logic to what they do i.e. "If God didn't want us to eat each other he would not have made us out of food" :WINK1:
Just because you can, doesn't make it right!!

            The Official God FAQ

Interestingly enough, i've seen the part of Genesis in the pre 1611 version of the Bible, for all those that believe in the tales, it doesn't say that man shall have dominion over the animals, rather than the herb shall be thy meat.

King James version obviously sponsored by the meat industry.

Would I still eat meat if I had to catch and kill it? Yes.

Back-in-the-day, my Grandad was a butcher and slaughtered his own animals. As a small child I was never allowed in the slaughterhouse, (although I subsequently learnt to shoot pheasant and kill rabbits and chickens), but I did learn that if you're going to kill anything, it should be done quickly, cleanly and with the minimum of fuss.

I'm not saying I agree with modern farming (slaughtering) methods - I dont, but I do think it's a mistake to anthropomorphise.

I gave up meat about 6 years ago. I heard about what KFC do to chickens and that was it. Not that I ate KFC.

I realised that the meat I could afford to buy was probably bad meat, so I stopped. At the time if I could have afforded free range I might have carried on.

Now I do my best because my husband isn't veggie. I don't eat meat at all and rarely fish now. I think I miss it but when I accidentally eat something from a buffet that has meat in it I feel so sick I know I wouldn't be able to go back.

Hubby has organic beef from Tesco (no more expensive that normal beef really) and barn reared chicken. The only thing I am struggling with is pork and that is next for me to find a better alternative too.

I find it easy to cook 2 meals (we don't have kids but this would apply to more people) If I'm cooking say a curry I just have 2 pans, I put chicken in one and meat replacement in the other then just add the same of everything else to both. I'm not cooking 2 meals, just cooking it in 2 pans.

If I'm doing something "english" like pie and mash I just cook a meat pie for him and I have a quorn fillet or veggie burger.

I have a friend who's partner is allergic to meat, they cook one sauce then stir meat into her half at the very end. Simples :)

If you think you could give up meat... just do it. Yes for a while you will crave it because your body is used to it, but there is so much out there that you can replace it with it's easy.

Now giving up cheese... that's a COMPLETELY different matter!!!

I know what you mean about cheese, I was vegan for 6 months to see if it would help a sinus problem, it didn't.

I cracked when I visited the cheese counter at the Big Sheep in Devon.

When Sainbury's first brought out a quorn pie, it was labled vegetarian.

My then girlfriend cooked us one up, I couldn't eat it as it tasted too much like moo moo. She got cross with me, but a few weeks later it came to light it they'd been putting beef extract in it.

Really??? I had a tesco meat replacement "beef and onion" pie a few years ago and couldn't eat it. I also find the quorn sausage rolls a little too meaty. I know they use a lot of yeast extract which isn't good for me but tastes sooo goood!!
