They were saying on the news that Anders Behring Breivik is insane!!!
He planned this attack meticulously to the last details, how do you define insane :what:

if you kill innocent people at random, you have to be insane

It's extremely difficult to decide whether someone like this is sane enough to answer for his crimes, but I don't think the ability to plan excludes you from the Nutters Club. Blowing away innocent strangers because you harbour some sort of bizarre grudge doesn't strike me as very stable behaviour, however carefully you plot your deeds. I imagine Rebecca Leighton, the nurse who has allegedly killed some of her patients with insulin, also had to plan ahead somewhat, even if not on such an elaborate scale.

There is a lot of hand-wringing going on at the moment but I don't think we'll ever completely prevent loonies from doing this sort of thing. The attack in Norway is particularly shocking because so many people died in one operation. I wonder, however, how many people Harold Shipman, a first rate nutter if ever there was one, really killed? We'll never know the final toll. Yet there he was, a seemingly ordinary, hard-working doctor who was still functioning perfectly well in everyday life.

I think we tend to want our nutcases to be crazed people in straitjackets because that way they are at least easily identified as People To Avoid. The reality is much more sinister; the line between sane and insane is very blurred indeed.

I tend to agree, *dim*, but what about, for example, the attack on the London tube? Should we just say, when faced with the culprits, 'poor dears, they're obviously not all there. What they need is a nice psychiatric hospital, a therapist and regularly trips to a decent spa bath'?

If you plan something while going about you're normal buisness, you are not insane.
If you know what you are doing while you do it, you are not insane.

The bloke should have been shot on sight, regardless, insane or not, he should not be allowed to hide behind that tag.

I agree with Pete. If a dog mauls a child and kills it - you shoot it. You don't ask it it was insane, or had had an unhappy childhood or needs understanding. You don't debate whether its justice or revenge - you just shoot it.

But the nice, liberal Norwegians won't kill him. So, in the end, does it really matter whether he's sane or not? Nothing will bring back his victims and it therefore makes little difference whether they put him in a high security prison or Norway's equivalent of Broadmoor.

Why was he allowed to wander the island for in excess of an hour killing people? And why are they thinking of charging him with " Crimes Against Humanity " which is a war crimes offence? Also how did he manage to organise such a huge assault alone?

Allow some idiot on an island with a rifle, amongst unarmed people, who has just used a massive explosion as a decoy.
            And the plan comes together.

I'm sure it would have been a couple of days before anyone here could get an armed copper on the scene, bearing in mind that farce up in the lake district some months ago.

              This is why

Why did Derrick Bird Cumbria taxi driver killing spree go on for six hours
BECAUSE like Norway it was a distance for the law to travel, only Norway included water to cross along with the majority of the force drawn away due to the bombing in the Capital

The thought of charging him with crimes against humanity is that it carries a 30year sentence where the maximum for murder and mass murder is 21yrs

It is good he was not shot dead, he is now available for questions, and already this is leading to information needed to be known in other countries
              Quite possibly OURS

Huge assault alone, well apparently he went to the Island weeks before and stowed weapons and ammunition in a hideout in the woods
Not many childrens Christian Fellowship summer holidays have youth leaders armed to the teeth, so it is quite easy for one person with automatic weapons shooting as many in the crowd as he wished
Next he went round the side and appeared in his uniform stating he was an anti terrorist officer and called all those in hiding to come to the boat to take them to safety, when a crowd emerged he shot them too

A bit like going to Puffin Island in the Brizzle channel, stowing loads of gear
then on the busiest weekend for tourist bird watchers just gun them all down
No police there and maybe and hour to organise and get across to the island when informed
Insane NO insane is when you do NOT KNOW what you are doing, Mad maybe

              Jack McHammocklashing (IMHO)

The first person killed was an off duty police officer who tried to talk him out of it. Yeah right, the first thing he should have done was tell everyone to run, then called in SWAT.
